    Hey all,

I hope this is the right place for this..

I have been kicking the idea around of signing up to become a trucker, but the wife is completely against it, not because of the truck/driving, but because It seems like id have to get my start by signing on with a trucking company that will train me, and have me work for them for a year or two, and they all appear to be over the road type jobs. She would not want me to be away from home for weeks at a time.

I was wondering if its even possible to start out as a local truck carrier, like a coke/pepsi/UPS/Fedex truck driver that just goes from point to point and is home every night?

Can you let me know if its possibly to get into the industry this way? OR unless I know someone.. I have to start out OTR..? I wouldn't mind driving a semi, one without the extended cab, or just a normal delivery type box truck.. I just think driving would be an awesome job.

    Let me know your thoughts!

I'll jump in... First of all, I don't see where you call home... What part of the country are you in?
I know others do in house training as well, but I can't remember who: FedEx Freight has their own driver development program, you get paid while you learn. You may have to start on the dock for a little while if you have to wait for an opening, but probably not for long. If I remember correctly, it's a four week program, and it's pretty thorough. I left there last year after 18 years, I opted not to be a trainer, but I was a road test observer (RTO) and city coach for many years.

Put your location on your profile.

Don't have to go OTR. Companies will train for local such as Southeastern Freight Lines has their own training program.
Ask on the "Question from new Drivers" thread or "Trucking Schools" thread.

Here's a good deal, Maverick Transportation has their own CDL school. Home weekends and make over a thousand a week.

Schneider Bulk pays for CDL school. Later, with some tanker drivers, make $60K - $100K per year.
You can make $60K+ as a new driver right out of CDL school in tankers.

Sorry guys, location added, I reside in Northern Kentucky.. It is funny you mention FedEx, there is a FedEx hub down the road from my current job :) I will look into their program.

actionstan, just be aware... I'm not sure about the other divisions, I can only speak regarding FedEx Freight (although they all fall under the same umbrella, each division does operate independently of the others). I do not know if the othr divisions offer the same training program.
