Thanks for the info! LC Trans has an extensive 8 week training period. I will do the work and the driver is to teach. i am sure there will be times when the truck will run as a team. I am sure the company will do whats best for them. I intend to watch and learn, do as I am told, get as much under my belt as possible. I hope to be fully prepared and ready when I am assigned my own truck. There is no substitute for experience.

I, just like, Dambry2gsbo, graduated from the same school, same date. I decided on taking a tanker job with a major carrier. I always assumed that I would have to go OTR, but after I did my road test, and physical, the terminal manager asked me if I wanted OTR or local. I was caught a little off guard. I chose local, because my affairs are not quite in order, for OTR yet. I do not need to make the big money like some. One of our instructors called me to check on my progress [38 yrs exp, great, caring man ] He said that taking local might be a mistake, because if I wanted to go OTR later, I would not have interstate experience. Any opinions from the PRO'S. Hey Dambry, hope you are enjoying. I know you are going to be an excellent driver, because you care. Bill

It's true, 20 years local exp. doesn't equal 6 months of OTR.

the just of it is NO. you do not spend your day off driving home. You stay with your truck where it is. Unless its your company terminal or drop yard. In that case yes, you drive home on your time during your 34 hr reset. Also the majority of companies wont allow a driver to go more than 6 weeks out without time off.

Remember this: Most truck driving jobs pay more than other jobs with the same training time, but, in my opinion, you are not paid for miles driven but for enduring the boorish conduct of the people you have to interact with. Just realize that everyone you come in contact with has control over you (shipping, receiving, dispatchers, maintenance shop, and even the cashiers at the fuel stops). Consider any company that will give you a chance to learn. Very few will find that dream job. Truck driving is not cruising the country being your own boss. Don't belive the trucker ledgends, such as, "The New York cop told me to just run over that car parked on the corner" or "I just opened my trailer doors and spilled that load all over the consignee's parking lot". Good Luck.

Hi, I am new. I am thinking about going to the Swift Training Academy in Millington, TN. I have heard rumors about Swift that pertained to the last few years. I am wanting to know if this school is worth it and is Swift a decent company to work for starting out as a new driver. Thank you for any replies that you send me.

If thats the way you want to go about getting your CDL, look into Millis Transfer. They have there own school and only run east of the Mississippi so you would get more hometime then you would with swift and they pay better. Theres lots of info on them on here. they were on my list till I found out you either have to go to there school or have 1 yr OTR Exp.
