Gotta wrap a few loose ends of my life first, and can't get to my CDL training until October-November. That means I will be going out on the road in November -December. I'm going to go through a community college for a 160 hour course on my dime. I am planning on being based in the northern Midwest, and would prefer to run OTR west of the Mississippi if I can.
Is this going be a mistake to start out running snow, ice and cold weather right out of the chute, or is it going to be a good thing and toughen me up a bit quicker?
starting out in wintertime?

I started in a blizzard on Jan 2nd.
If anything, it will jade you against fair weather driving.....Jrdude5 Thanks this. -
I don't think it's a bad idea. Probably the best to learn in winter conditions. Hopefully, you'll be trained by someone knowledgable about winter driving, chaining up, what to look for when the road gets bad, etc. I think it's the absolute best time to get trained.
HuskerJim, Jrdude5, pattyj and 1 other person Thank this. -
I wouldn't count on staying west of Mississippi if you go OTR. Kind of like the ones that tell their dispatcher they don't want to go to NYC. Why do you have that preference? You miss running the awesome ride of the i40 @ the Tn/Nc border.

After school I started my training in November. My first load was good ole Cali Donners Pass.I think Winter is the best time to train.
Jrdude5 Thanks this. -
Makes no difference at all.
Starting with a GOOD company,
is a much bigger concern !!Marky84 Thanks this. -
I did my road test in an ice storm. (That sounds weird....ice storm? Hmm)....
Did training in a blizzard. Just tea ches you to slow down, pace yourself, and pay attention. -
When I was assigned my first truck I left out of SLC, UT in a snow storm.
Starting off in winter could be a good thing, you will be trained in driving in Ice and Snow and if you can do that Dry weather would be a breeze. TO be honest I rather drive on snow than in the Rain, Snow I know the road is slippery, Rain can fool you. -
It would be benificial if you get on with a decent company, and have a decent trainer to guide you through rough winter weather. Better than going into your first winter solo, with no winter driving experiance at all.
