OP here, have driven manual cars and pickups few years back. Did OK, not great. The double clutch thing and extra attention needed while under pressure of a driving test had me concerned.

I'll give the manual a few days.

Along the line of the more skills we have the better I'm also working on hazmat, tankers and doubles.

Don't worry it takes a couple years to get really smooth with a manual .. to where u can shift it like second nature.. u aren't going to perfect it in a couple weeks... the main thing to practice is keeping it in gear and not missing shifts, coasting in neutral.

I don't know... I tried learning Manual at my school and that was the hardest thing I've ever have to learn, switch to Auto two days later cause they didn't give enough time ( IMO ) to learn it, so that's two cents.

Passed the 3 part test at DMV for learners permit no problem.

But getting double clutch for a semi is not happening. I can float the gears or up shift like a car no problem. Downshift not working. I'll give it another couple days.

EVERY driver had more difficulty downshifting than upshifting. Don't give up & don't press the clutch one tiny but more than the little bit needed to get into or out of gear. EVERY newbie pushes the clutch TOO FAR and that just about guarantees you can't downshift. Clutch should only be pushed all the way when you are stopped. Every other clutch push should only be 25-50% of all the way. Semi trucks are not cars with car transmissions where you ALWAYS push clutch all the way down. Doing that in a truck makes shifting almost impossible and wears out the clutch brake.

This tells me you need to stick to an automatic. you don't float gears in a car or light truck, it destroys the syncros.
