this might seem like a crazy idea... however i encourage you to give your opinion. # My best friend and I have recently seperated from the United States Air Force. He has taken a job as a civilian contractor in Afgahnistan making 6 figures. He wants to invest his money into a truck/driver and start a ground roots trucking company. He has roughly $80,000 roughly to invest. This must cover truck/trailer/equipment/cost to get legal. My dad is driver of 35+ years or experince. He recently sold his 1997 379 Pete and took a job driving a local route. we can buy his truck back for $40,000. Its a turned up 600 cat with a recent rebuild. Fresh paint and a nice 24" stretch. We figure $20,000 grand for a nice drop deck. That would leave about 20,000$ to get use legal as far as paperwork and intial cost. # with the old man driving, amd taking say a %30 cut per load... is there enough money to go around for my buddy to turn a profit. we figure you already have equity in the buisness having the equipment paid for.

Spend it on hookers & blow instead.

You'll lose it just the same as starting a trucking company with no experience, but you'll have better stories.

I would first think long and hard about investing other people's money on a venture you have no clue about.

Have your friend contact Fidelity or some other investment firm to invest the money to make it, because without being in this business, it is really hard to learn how to manage it let alone insure that there is a good ROI.

My thinking is that if you need to ask this question, the answer is probably no. Why I say that is that if you are as serious as you sound, you should already know what fees, insurances, permits, bonds, etc.. you will need and a decent idea behind how much they cost. Also, before I would seriously consider becoming my own authority, I would want an established network of contacts and similar to find work. If your Dad has been a driver for 35 years, it is probably he has the network contacts to get work.
As with any business endeavor, it IS a business and having a good understanding of the dynamics involved with that particular business and having a good understanding of the principles and attitudes of ANY business are essential.
My opinion is you need to learn more and research more before you go any farther. One of the biggest factors in new businesses failing has to do with a lack of common business knowledge to begin with. Fortunately, that is a obstacle that can be overcome with learning.
My 2 cents anyway. Best of luck to you!

$40k for a truck that is 16 years old? Thats way too much...is it a show truck? Pete's are nice trucks but I prefer the aerodynamic trucks or any truck that is some what fuel efficient. That big ole flat nose and a 600 hp CAT is a bit much. You can find MUCH, MUCH better deals on a used truck. Try looking at the Truck Paper's website.

it spent most its life as a show truck. it was recently. restored. fresh engine/paint pretty much everything you could think of.dad put over a million on her in six years. she has been retired just pulling hogs every once in a while the last two years. we just know the truck so well. we know its history. sometimes the nostalga is worth that half mile in fuel consumption. afterall, it would be paid for. whats an. honest weekly gross for a truck after you pay fuel, imsurance, tolls and taxes. say you pull a drop deck and have your brokers license and incorperate. is there enough money out there if you were hungry enough?
