Thank you gntorres61!
I'll check out Cargo Transporters like you said.
Home time isn't a major, if after my probationary period I can bring the husband for a ride-a-long once in a while. I would like to do long hauls. 48 states plus Canada and maybe Mexico. I know I won't earn if the pedal isn't to the metal. I'm looking into refrigerated. I understand it's more of a hassle but the pay is better.
I like the idea of an automatic but
I also want to learn gears so I'm not limited in the future. I'm guessing I would have time to learn gears.
The only thing that frazzled me is the thought of lack of miles.
Thanks for your awesome advice! Going to check out Cargo Transporters now.
Starting with Roehl in February

Also check out Abilene Motor Express in Richmond VA, Rose. You will get more miles and see more country there but automatic trucks also. Automatics are great in traffic jams and I think sticks will go the way of the pterodactyl in the not too distant future. They have some reefers. If you are looking to take a pet with you, Abilene, JS Helwig - TX, FreyMiller- Oklahoma City, Magnum (Fargo ND) are all reefer that have a pet policy.

I looked at Cargo Transporters. That seems like an awesome company to work for. But I can't find training for CDL-A listed anywhere on the website. It seems like they are only hiring drivers who already have CDL-A.
I guess that's why I was looking into Roehl. They help you get your CDL-A while your in training with them. I don't have one yet. I'm just now starting to study the CDL-A manual.
I'll check out the others you mentioned too.
Thanks so much George! -
Hey George. As far as Abilene, JS Helwig, FreyMiller, and Magnum go,...
One (1) year verifiable OTR experience
Class A CDL.
Those four are a no-go for me at this point without my CDL already.
They all sound great. But I'm not a driver with a CDL already and these companies don't provide that type of training. I'll keep looking though.Last edited: Oct 15, 2016

Ok Rose, you might check out Schneider too. I understand they have a really good CDL training program too. Nothing against Roehl but Marshfield WI gets mighty cold. I had considered them when I started out a few years ago. I should have gone that route. School pretty much teaches you how to pass the CDL exam but little else. My trainers (after school) didn't help me as much as I needed. Pretty much fended for myself and I had/have little instincts for driving. I learned by dinging trailers (gotta watch your mirrors-they will save you on your turns) and crushing cab fairings-jack knife turns in tight places. Trust me, you don't want to be doing that. I hope to be back soon. Waiting for my DAC report to see how tough Cargo was on it/me. Holler anytime, Rose! Always happy to help a newbie! Regardless of looks/gender.

The training for Roehl would be Atlanta GA for me I think, because of my current location. They have several terminal throught the USA; not sure if I would do training in WI.
I also looked into their different fleet options. Almost all of their rigs are 2 years or newer and also automatic.
I'll look into Schneider now as well.
Dang. You've been so helpful! -
Well... after spending a couple of days doing research, I feel my best option is what I original felt. I'm going to stick with my plan to get onboard with Roehl. They seem to offer everything I'm looking for.
I appreciate all of the helpful advice. You have all been so amazing!
I'll call my recruiter at Roehl on Monday morning and ask about making sure I can attend my daughter's wedding in February. That's the only thing holding me back. If I can get that time off, at least for 3 days, I'll be asking them to start me now.
I hope to be able to jump on some other threads here soon and learn even more from all of the wonderful people on this forum! -
Of the big megas, they indeed would be my #1 followed by Schneider, Swift, then CRST and Werner. Maybe Werner over CRST. Good luck, Rose. Please let us know. Thats what makes this blog so great!! All the best!!
RoseWild Thanks this. -
Just a word of advice, I worked for Roehl twice, they always got me home a couple days late, so tell them you're going to have to be home earlier than you actually are. As far as training goes it use to be top notch, but that was many years ago, hopefully it still is.
RoseWild Thanks this. -
Thank you DrFlush! The only situation I need to be here for right now is my daughter's wedding in February. So if I do get in before February, I'll take your advice and ask for the whole week instead of just the 3 days I need to be there.
Thanks for your help!
