I still see a problem here. Drivers getting paid by the mile but working by the hour. According to DOT guidelines drivers are always either line 3 or 4 unless sleeping or off duty. By making false witness(recording one thing and doing another) on record of one's actions and whereabouts, drivers are violating the law. It clearly is a problem when you get nailed in an inspection for falsifying a drivers daily log, be it electronic or paper. "keep it legal, and log it as you do it" requires companies to behave in accordance with DOT Rules. Soon or Later,Load Planners, Shippers and Recievers will be forced to adjust schedules to E-Logs. The E-Log should be used to accurately record HOS. This technology can and will impact driving and thus affect revenues and productivity for everyone in the transportation industry.

After I hit a dock and I sit waiting for 3 hours for a live unload, I am definitely off duty. I am either taking a nap, eating or on the internet. I log it as such and I believe this represents an accurate picture of my work day.

Exactly, when it is backed into a dock, you are no longer responsible for the truck. If it's a driver assisted live unload/load, then you are supposed to log it as line 4, but other than that I log 15 mins and go off duty or sleeper berth depending on how long I'm there.

@PopMartian...you just keep logging it the way you think is right, and enjoy you 40 hour weeks, while I take full advantage of my 70. While someone else is loading my truck, I am not taking away from my driving time 3,4-even 6 hours sometimes because they are behind or just slow.
