Well I know we looked at tanker experience and I'm sure all the top tanker companies do too. And along with us most companies don't look that hard at OTR drivers. Sorry but they want local drivers with tanker experience. That's the major oil companies.

The other aspect is what kind of work will you do until then and what kind of money does that provide to balance against the time of experience that you waste waiting..................

Reefers are seasonal, but you are in the right area. I would look at the tankers, and stick it out at starvation wages. In the mean time, look to some of the guys working the oil patch. In your area, a CDL, and oil right at your back door, that is where I would be. Even a roustabout off shore at this point.
Myself, but not knowing your situation, but knowing your geographical location, I would be in school. Oil School. It ain't going to run out as some say, and hopefully you will find an outfit that will pay your way. But that all gets down to a persons work ethic, are you worth the risk? If you have half a brain, don't waste it behind the wheel of a truck like I am. But that is all I know anymore, to late to go back to nursing.

Lotsa good advice on here - and I appreciate it a lot.
Looks like I'm gonna starve now, and maybe later too, at least for a while. Talked to the company Monday morning, and they issued a hiring freeze effective immediately, so all training has been canceled. They do expect business to pick up some from the ag business (fertilizer and pesticide/herbicide) around March or so, and they do want me to check back in a few weeks. And I may wind up doing that, I know they're losing a couple of drivers due to low freight. Meanwhile I talked to and applied to Superior (I know they sometimes hire and train noobs), but the TM is out until next week.
Just seems to be a bad time to try and get into the business - just about everybody has a hiring freeze on now. I kinda hesitate to go to one of the 'new driver mills', because I really want to find a company I can stay with for a while - I don't want to move for at least one or two years, and sitting around waiting for dispatch doesn't excite me much.
A lot of the larger reefer companies here still have decent miles, but not many are hiring right now. Driver turnover has slowed down a good bit, and everybody is just trying to tough it out until freight picks up. Can't say I blame them, but it does make it hard for the new guys to find a job.
Guess I'll just have to pound the pavement for a few weeks and see what turns up. I can make it through January, but I really need to be working in February, even if it's only training pay. Doesn't seem like many job openings in any industry right now. -
I have never seen it this bad. I have never even dreamed of it being this bad! Im leaving a great paying tank job to go pull a dry van for a lot less pay. But IM very excited That I have a job offer. Check with con way. I have made a thousand calls and talked to a thousand recruiters and drivers. Con way seems to be one of the few with something to offer. The only thing I can guarantee is that when things to pick up I will be right back to my tank job! In the mean time bills and child support still gotta be paid.

Thanks for the tip Gator. I didn't know that the OTR for con way was still hiring. My BIL has worked local for them for about 12 years now, and the local terminal just did a layoff and their is rumor of another one. I'll definitely call the long haul division today - they're a good company. I know the local drivers get treated real good.

Normal run for me is frozen potatoes out of WA to NC then pick up a load of frozen turkeys and head back. Pretty much have worn a path in the road doing that.
