I'm up here in Michigan, LEOs have no clue what to do with these things from what I have been hearing from other local company safety depts. The state police were not ready for this in the least, talking summer to be up to speed.

    Timin770 Thanks this.

I'm not educated at Ivy League school, so excuse me when I make the statement, "what's the big deal? You're in compliance or not. You have an ELD or you don't. It's working properly or maybe it's not. So what? Let the carrier worry about if they can pass a future safety audit using whatever they're using or not using"

It's really not that difficult to handle. Am I missing something?

For one thing it's the driver who gets the ticket on the roadside or scale house, not the company. The company may choose to pay the ticket for you but guess what happens if they don't pay it

That's true but if their boss has put a flakey ELD in the truck, then the driver is "in the clear". And if the system is always failing and often can't pass even a rudimentary inspection, then the driver has a decision to make about what's important to them looking into the future.

I feel for those few who work for a boss who's too cheap to invest in quality hardware and systems but I'm not going to lose any sleep worrying about their woes and pending problems if they choose to accept those issues and stay there.

You wouldnt be in the clear until you go to court or send an attorney in, both of which cost money

Well, it sounds like no "malfunction citations" are going to happen before all the crappy stuff gets fixed or thrown out. There will be plenty of time for drivers and carriers to "adjust" while enforcement people also figure it out. In May, drivers better be working with well-functioning ELD's, one way or another, or they'll be better off doing something else.

I think what we will eventually see is a handful of big ELD manufacturers remaining after the troublesome units go by the wayside. Sort of like the way you only see a small handful of GPS manufacturers
