Are you a company driver, 1099, or O/O???

Here is what I hit for the 2015 Tax Year. I am still a resident of Florida but I am a company driver out of Richmond, VA... Because my year end tax forms had earning out of VA, I had to file VA for State Taxes... So even though FL has no State Income Tax, I had to file/pay based on my Virginia Earnings.

So, for me in my current situation, there is no advantage of trying to set up or keep residency in a low tax state... They see me as an out of state worker with VA Earnings... Period.

MidWest Mac Daddy, you probably got screwed. Has nothing to do with companies location. You are a FL resident and your account info and DL is there than you pay zero state tax. For sure.

Incorrect. I worked at a company in a city that had local tax. I ended up paying the local taxes, even though the only time I spent in that town was while at work, or a little shopping.

I live in El Paso, TX and worked in New Mexico for a while and had to file a New Mexico state tax form.

Really thats strange I have worked in Alaska seasonally for 20 years. While living in Florida I never got taxed on Alaska income until i moved to Georgia. Now full time AK so no biggie. You were not a resident of NM! Hmmm going to dig deeper

MidWest Daddy, I did some research and found out that many states have recently changed their laws. Because of the increase in telecommuting some states have implemented a law that requires them to charge state tax even for non-resident workers. I don't know which states did it but VA may very well be one of them.

I also wondered what would happen if you lived in a state that DID have a state tax and your company was in a state that charged the non-resident tax and it there is a tax credit form you can submit to get sort of a dollar per dollar credit for taxes paid on income in another state.

PacRat, so you were taxed in NM or just filed a form? Think about that so if you live in GA and work NC for a company you get double taxed by states on top of federal? Thats BS if thats the case

NM taxes were deducted out of my check. I ended up getting most of it back on my return. It has to do with where your payroll is dispursed from, not so much where you live.
