How important is it to track milage in each state you pass through and the fuel purchased in each state ?
Just Seems to be just one more pain in my arse to me!

AZ for example will stop each and every truck running across the scales and will ask you show your IFTA to them....You will need to file the mileage/Fuel use/purchases quarterly and if you give out false numbers or fail to report your numbers...you just might get a notice. Every time you pass through a P.O.E., your info is being recorded....You won't get much grief for being a few miles off from time to time....but don't think for one minute you can get away from not recording and reporting. -
Yes you can, they dont record crap, just look at it to see if your ifta is up to date. I never showed each trip.
-
I have had both an FMCSA audit and a BIT...they do cross-reference your records against theirs...... -
-
I also have to file monthly with OR...OR currently is not a member of IFTA.
-
We've been audited and all they look at is the log books you provide and the ifta records you provide, if you dont show them anything else then its their problem not yours. I only showed the logs for the trips i report and thats that. Been doing that for 8 years now.

But the actual issue is recording mileage and fuel purchases... Does a carrier maintain accurate records or not? I can run overweight and bypass scales in certain states by taking secondary roads but, the laws of probability will eventually catch up and I would eventually get caught.....Just saying....
Eventually everything will be required to become recorded electronically just not logs..... -

Every little trick carriers have pulled in the past are nothing new to DOT btw.....
I have heard of O/O's in the dump biz who fabricated fuel cup inserts in their tanks to give the illusion that there is D2 in the tanks so they could get off-road fuel and not pay the taxes. The cups hold enough fuel to give the appearance of a tank full of fuel.....Smoke testing nails them every time....
