So, I've been having a bit of a debate with myself for the last week. Got two weeks left of vacation and I'm not sure if I should go back or go ahead and move on. It would be very easy to do right now with the truck turned in and all my things at home.

Here's the thing. I make decent money at sni. At 46cpm now. Get about 3k miles a week. Out of those, 2800 are paid... lol. On average anyway. Looking at the last few months, I'm somewhere around 1200 week average.

But I'm only home for a couple days every three weeks. And that's starting to wear. More and more quickly. I can drop down to two weeks out and two days home, but that'll definitely be a hit to the wallet.

Also, I'm in Charlottesville VA and there's not much local right in town.

I've a year and a month experience. All otr van. A perfect record. And all the endorsements. And a passport. No twic, but that's an easy problem to solve.

I've also a very big problem with driver facing cameras. But only if I'm actually going to sleep in the truck. Wouldn't have an issue in a daycab.

    What do you guys think?

I think you have to do what is best for you. Based on what I have heard from a few Schneider drivers about regional, I wouldn't do it. I just spent a week at home. In that time I was so lazy that I didn't even take the trash out or clean my house. Being home ain't all it is cracked up to be. I keep walking out to my truck and cranking it up. The rest of the time I'm sitting on my couch and wondering if my truck is thinking of me as well.

    *looks longingly out the window*

move to an LTL company and closer to a bigger city, my friend works at scheneider as well and he run's about 2300 miles (regional) and he says it's getting old not making it home on time or spend quality time with his family.

$0.46/mile for 1 year in is exceptional for van or reefer. So there's that.

Many places will take a year, some require two, and the top of the food chain three. So there's that.

Have you considered Landstar? Or just want to remain company driver?

If your not near a large population center, or trucking hub, that kind of limits your options. There is a smaller town about 60 or 70 miles South East of Phoenix, that for some reason a bunch of people built DC's there, and they are forever looking for local drivers, cause if you don't live there, who is going to drive 150 miles a day to work?

If your just going to jump to another OTR company, if it were me, I'd just stay put. That way you have the longevity at just one company, and people like that.

If you want a local gig that pays well, I have two words you want to consider, Ohio & Pennsylvania.

I mean if your tired of Schneider's BS, your going to find it's a lot of the same BS wherever you may roam with large carriers.

If I were a younger man, I'd do food service, but I'm too long in the tooth for that now. I like to work, and if you are like that, you'd like it.

Fed Ex company drivers make bank, but you need three years, or work inside the dock and maybe get in earlier.

I've never worked for SNI, and wasn't gonna even reply, but here goes. Since you still have 2 weeks of vacay left, make a checklist or a spreadsheet type dealy. List what you WANT in a company....everything you can think of, down the left column. Explore a few other companies, or types of haul, ie: LTL as another poster mentioned (Are there any NEAR you?) and maybe some local gigs in your area, across the top. Fill in the blocks, accordingly.
I'm not trying to sound rudimentary or condescending. It's what worked for me years ago when I was first OTR, and I ended up leaving my "then" current company (USX) and going with FedEx/ Line Haul. Problem there was, I forgot to put a box in the left column, called "TEAMING." I called THAT one quits after a bit over a year, due to that matter. Otherwise, Home every weekend; APU, etc... back in the day, even.... and better pay.
I finally found my intrastate pulling tanks.
No ads in papers, nada. I stopped by the guys barn and admired his 'Pete's one day, on my way home, not far from my house.... and thus the story of how I ended up here.

Since you DO have the time to ponder, why don't you drive around in your PV and see what's near, maybe within a 30 mile radius? What ya got to lose?

Okay, just my 2cents... best wishes, either way. Be safe, driver. Enjoy your vacay.

ps: The companies that WERE big on driver facing cams, ie: Swift, are disbanding the idea, bit by bit.

VERY well said, Dave. Agreed. (and yes, Ohio is GREAT for local / intrastate.)

Well what I understand 2300 miles he average from Monday (0800am) to Saturday afternoon, he also states there's a lot of short runs in between. Again he only runs regional.

I would check out Houff Transfer. They have a terminal in Weyers Cave and one in Richmond. From what I can tell it's one of the best paying dry van jobs in your area. Home every weekend too. They seem to be selective about their drivers and claim to require more experience than what you have (used to be 5 but I think they lowered it to 2) but they are advertising weekly for help so you never know. They also encourage potential applicants to stop by a terminal and meet face to face. With a good impression they might would forget about the min driver requirements. Never know.
