I've been a cyclist my entire life, and when I was OTR, it was hard getting any sort of exercise short of freight lumping. So, I decided to take up walking as a regular form. I used to chose truckstops not so much for the amenities they had, but for what else was in the area. Rather than eat at truckstop restaurants, maybe there was a healthier (or just cheaper) option a half mile down the road? I did gain some weight, but I never got fat....

If you wanna stay fit and healthy first and foremost is what you eat. I go to Great lengths to make sure that I eat extremely healthy food. I’m talking organic super foods and that’s all I eat. Then you don’t have to exercise as hard. You gotta remember, we are sitting most of the day. The average person will burn about 2500 cal in a day, we burn about 1800 because we’re sitting so much. Then you got exercise when you can. I flip my schedule from graveyards to mornings and back a lot because I drive reefer, which makes it extremely challenging. But when I’ve had a good nights sleep, I will drag my Resistance bands out and I try to go for a walk at least three or 4 miles every single night.

I spent years in the food business creating menus etc; In my early 20s, so I feel like I have an advantage. It’s very easy for me to whip up some really creative good food on the truck. It’s not easy staying fit out here, but where there’s a will there’s a way. Gotta get your own healthy foods and stick with it.
