As the question asks, is it relatively the same process? Any surprises on this job? Seems like everything on my truck has decided to take a dump on me all at once.

Yes its the same except you don't have to mess with pulling the axle shaft out like on the drives.

If you ever had to do a trailer axle... same thing.

Might I suggest that you replace the double nut with a Torques nut ?
I've switch my trailer to them 5 yrs ago and have been very satisfied.
Its a single nut about 3/4" thick and uses a locking ring that fits inside the nut to secure it. No more busted knuckes and no more having to dealing with 2 1/8" nuts.

yeah, like a trailer axe. easier job then drive axe replacement. follow axe manufacter's manual, especially with meritor and SAF axes.

On some axes use 4' socket to unlock nut.

On some Volvo truck single use self locking nuts are used. You remove nut and it cant be reused. So identify axle first. Now it is easy to get any axle manual in internet

what a truck do you have? what axle?

Easiest way is to call your Pete dealership and give them the last 6 of your VIN...assuming the axle hasn't been changed out previously, they'll be able to tell you what axle the truck came out with. There's usually an ID tag somewhere on the axle that can identify the brand and model.
