Hi, in my 99 Volvo WG64 with TRW Steering box, the steering is too easy with no return to center.
I've dropped the pitman arm with the axle raised and there is no binding when turning the wheels by hand. I suspect the gear box.
An online search did not lead to any new insight, although several 4 wheeler forums report the exact same problem in just about every brand.
How about you guys, any experience with this?

No return to center is an alignment issue, and overly light steering likely is as well. I'm guessing driving it straight down the road is like trying to push chain?
-
Was wondering if air pressure was to high in the steers? Could be causing that. Riding on just the center of the tread.
-
Truck drives straight as an arrow, bobtail or loaded trailer. Tire wear is excellent.
-
No, tire pressures are good all around. Certainly has me scratching my head. The dealer says to change the steering box and I may, but as that is the most expensive route I want to eliminate as many possibilities as possible first.
-
Yes that needs to be a last resort.

may be valve body torsion spring loose/broken. it is easy to change valve body, it is located on top of steerbox. Use TRW PDF manual to read how to.

Had the same problem once on a Volvo. Turned out to be the power steering was in constant bypass/boost due to a faulty (stuck?) valve.
-
Okay you and StrayKat seem to have the same idea, I am going look into that tomorrow.
Thanks, I will let you know what I find. -
I had a filter come apart in the power steering reservoir one time and it jammed the valves in the pump. Felt like you were steering on ice it was that easy and it wouldn't return to center unless done manually, was alot cheaper than a steering box.
