Hi sorry if there's another post but couldnt find one specific to my prob.
Truck was going and driving like a dream. Went in for service and 6mth safety...they did some minor stuff but said the top steer u joints needed replacing (lower ones done a few mths ago).
They also did the front right steer wheel seal and dropped the transmission oil to do a seal (oil was milky but that's a whole other story).
Now driving down the road with full load on the steering is completely wrong....steering wheel is very stiff ..hard and heavy to turn. ..it feels more like your pushing it than turning it.
Also it feels like a 1 to 2 second delay for the truck to respond. It's awful to pass other vehicles on a narrow 2 lane ..doesn't feel safe.
I've driven a company truck before now with a busted steering rack so have the comparison. ..it's not the same kind of wandering as that.
Am taking it to another shop I use later today as I'm on the road now to see what they say but would appreciate any ideas
It's a kw w900l 2006 cat c15 eaton 18spd by the way
Thanks from a lady truckee pulling her hair out![]()

It sounds like the u joint that they replaced is binding and needs to be removed and put back in right. This would cause what you are feeling in the steering wheel and if it is done poorly enough it can turn into a steering failure so I would suggest not driving it and calling the company to get it fixed right.

I would strongly suggest you stop somewhere safe out of traffic, flip the hood, and take a good look at everything. You do not want to be driving if your steering is compromised. Slowly turn the steering shaft back and forth (engine running) and watch all components carefully, from the shaft, through the box, the pitman arm, drag link, tie rod ends, the connecting rod running over to the passenger side and the king pins. You don't have to know what each of these terms mean, just follow the movement all the way down to the wheels. There should be almost no slop or play anywhere, if you see a place where your turning the steering shaft seems to stop and not carry on through to the wheels, that's bad. I have a suspicion that the heavy feeling may be coming from an improperly installed u joint, but that will be verified by the shop your going to. For now, safety is the big concern. Check everything, including wheel nuts and hubs. If you have any doubts something is not right, do not drive it. This is not something to fool with.
Ke6gwf, Duckman1005 and EWV Thank this. -
Thanks both. ..going to be at the shop in 20 mins so taking it steady...will let u know later

Yeah what he said but to add to this, if it is a u joint binding, then you can't see it. It has to be removed and either taken out and put back in right or adjusted to free it up, any mechanic will know what to do.EWV Thanks this.

All steering shaft u-joints do not necessarily align together on both ends of the same shaft as a driveshaft. Compare it to another truck if in doubt.
EWV Thanks this. -
Its not an alignment problem but it is an install problem. You can do this with u joints in a car too, beat them into the yoke and not relieve the pressure and they are very stiff and bind.

Agree with Ridgeline. I changed one on my truck put it together in a vise. Noticed it swiveled easy one way but hard the other. Installed it anyway thinking it would "work in". The steering wheel would turn easy-hard-easy-hard. Didn't even bother trying to drive. Took it apart and got it loosened up,reinstalled, all good. Curious what they found on yours ewv?
EWV Thanks this. -
It's just in the shop now so will let u know
-
Ok the end result. ...they had replaced top and bottom u-joints even tho they told me it was just the top one needed.
Turns out they screwed up the bottom one somehow...it was on so tight it had to be broken to get off and a new one put on...now driving like a dream again.
Drives me mad u can't rely on good workman ship. .shoukd have know when I had to bleed my truck last night right out of their shop and service at -20c.
We r from canada and the exchange rate made us look to get more work done up there but we are reverie back to the shop in York NE where they have never let us down and always fitted us in asap...it's worth the exchange rate loss to get the job done right the first time!!
Thanks for all u guys input I appreciate it...till next time
Ruthless and Duckman1005 Thank this.
