Hey folks; new member here. I've got a 2005 Freightliner Classic 120. The upper U-joint in steering shaft is loose. They discontinued the part, however put out a technical bulletin that has a revised steering shaft part number. Here is my issue, I've got a steering shaft here out of a Freightliner Columbia that seems identical, part numbers do not match. I know that I shouldn't put his one in as a replacement, but what are your thoughts on this? and why shouldn't I put it in? Thank you.

I see, you’re saying the shaft is bad. If it all measures up the same. Why not? Freightliner Usually uses as many of the same parts as possible. A new shaft would be best, with new u joint. Hard to believe the yoke on the shaft is bad, Can’t just change u joint?

I agree with you. If I could find a u-joint to fit it, its stamped and they usually want you to replace the whole thing in this instance. I've seen them go bad in the steering shaft but never seen the top one below the steering wheel!

I’ve replaced them a few times around 500 k on steering box, but my current Truck has a sealed one at the steering box. 19 yrs, and over 2 mil. Still good. The one under the dash needs replaced, it has a grease fitting, and like others has always been greased. Go figure. I also have slop in tilt mechanism. Need to find a good column, at junkyard. New one is over $1000. I’m sold on the sealed joint though.

I hear yeah. After searching for a steering shaft with a certain part number as well as Dealer searching for one, I found the Technical Bulletin that that part number no longer exist. Called the dealer to let them know what they couldn't figure out and they tell me it's $1100! Call the junkyard and find one for $100. I am going to the junkyard now!

    Rideandrepair Thanks this.
