97' Tractor, new step deck.. looking to lease. I live in the savannah ga area. I've heard that landstar is the way to go in this area, but I've read they are going to mandate eobr's soon. I've also heard great things about mercer, but 10 to 1 flat bed to step deck loads and not sure how much freight they move in and out of my area. There is also bennet and lonestar.. not too informed on them at the moment. Any suggestions. Or should I just keep running my own authority and hope freight picks up and things get better?

I have had my own authority for 20 years in the FB, SD & DD side. I have found that if frieght is slow for me its also as slow or slower for the big guys because the small guys panic and fill there roster full to over capicity.

its not soon, all new hires have to go eobr. have you set yourself up as a preferred carrier with mercer or landstar?

I have a dedicated weekly 1100 mile one way run for myself and my leased truck with a landstar agent. We are set up with Mercer but do not do that much with them at this time. Its always evolving, this freight business.

The customer has had 1 to many unpleasant situations with some BCOs and has been using us for 2 years now. They are undertract and I am prohibited from back soliciting. We have worked out a rate and all parties are satisfied as of now.

yes, but like most freight on a broker board you have to pick through it to hopefully find a good rate going to a decent area. Just the leftovers for me.

last year I was told things were slow because it was an election year. But this season is starting out slower than last spring and my concerns are escalating. If this year is slower than last I'm going to be depressed. I wasn't sure if leasing to a bigger company would help keep me afloat considering they have more connections in more areas. But your point is very helpful. I didn't consider that either.

I was considering leasing to buddy moore trucking but they have an age restriction. 10 years or newer. I'm not going into debt to lease. Plus my truck has sentimental value.

Know who they are before you consider what you are being told. We where able to build a relationship with the agent and his customer through good service and time to get what have today. It was a DAT broker board load that develope into a good business relation to where we drop our trailers now. This is a small shop that only ships 2 loads sometimes 3 loads per to the same customer for 26 years now.

We operate and are domiciled in western VA, there are some good loads moving put your area to this area and others. 2.10 - 2.60 legal per mile. Do you use DAT.
