Hi. I need some help form oldtimers to decide which route i should go. Husband and wife team, staying out for 8 weeks at a time, so operating near home is not an issue. Home is in Las Vegas. I have my own authority. Not looking for some crazy miles, 4000-4200 will do it if the rate is right. I'm leaning toward 48 aluminum flat, but wife is pushing toward 53 step. Never drove an open deck, but willing to give a shot.

    An
    y ideas?

There is more flatbed freight than stepdeck. But if you were running team and staying out for 2 months at a time then you could also make good money running Step. I personally would stick to a flat as no matter what I could get freight to move if needed.

I would say it depends on what you really want to get into and you your hooked up with. Have a buddy who was real glad to get rid of his two steps and know of others who only want to run steps. Guys do well with either it just really depends on what you want to haul.

I think that way too, but I figured that can haul most flatbed loads with load levelers.

to be honest, right now I don't have a special preference what kind of loads to haul. If the pay is ok, no problems there. I just hate sitting at food warehouses with a wife and 2 dogs for 10-12 hours.

Flatbed myself, just my preference and more loads for flatbeds.

agree if you want to keep busy and have a better chance of getting loaded go with a flat...

i can't count the number of times i have been told we don't load on levelers...

I've ran into this delima myself. I currently have an all Alumnium flat, and never have problems finding easy loads. But I also never haul over 35,000# and the majority of my loads only take up 3/4 of the trailer.

Ive been contemplating a 53' combo-step with can locks. Almost every load I haul could fit on it, and it would open up other options as well like taller machines and such. And the weight is only 3,200# more than my flat, so I could still scale 47k if need be. Price is about the same for both.

bur as other have said, many places just refuse to load steps, even tho it easily fits.

there has been times maybe 10 that i was able to explain that my lower deck is 43' and everything will fit down there, well ok they will say and off i go,

i like being to put something that is 10'6 tall and run with it, in some states you cant be over height on a flat but can permit for it on a step.
can locks would be nice though

A word of caution, the flatbed sub sector of the trucking industry isn't a good area to run as a team. The majority of shippers are shutting down for the day by 2:30 to 3:30 pm. You really can't take full advantage of a team if you have restricted shipping and receiving hours.
