This month has been a little tough but I put together a loop from TX to MN for mediocre money, from MN to MA for a huge rate, and a short run from MA to MD for a nice rate. I’ll end the month at just over 19k in revenue and 1.99 a mile on all miles, and 15% empty miles.
The broker I pull for 90% of the time is starting to struggle. Tyson told him they barely have loads to cover their own trucks right now. I’ll probably be getting on the board a lot more for a little while until things improve. The Tyson loads I’ve done this month aren’t paying much right now.
Their stuff out of Arkansas is still decent but I told him I can’t do the backhauls for what they’re paying.

My new trailer is built and waiting to be transported. Working with the finance company to get it funded. Hoping to have that done next week sometime.

It’s time for a new one. The one I have is an ok trailer but I don’t want to go another Summer with it. It has a hard time being eight years old. The price per month on the new one is only 300.00 more per month than I spend already. Things have definitely slowed down and I’ll be changing up what I do to make the most of it. I’ve already talked to my primary broker about it. He isn’t too happy that I don’t want to do those backhauls. I have to run smart as long as the market is slow. I’ll be running similar to when I first started instead of doing more out and back stuff.

It is slow but I’m still hitting around 19k a month in revenue. That’s down from 20-23k. In 2017 I had a couple of 26k months. I have a lot of cash in the bank right now and don’t have to worry if things are a little tight for awhile. The only debt I’ll have, when I get my $10k deposit back, will be the equipment.

I had a talk with a senior account manager for a large brokerage house the other day. He told me their company has pulled back from bidding on and procuring large blocks of freight buys during contract season, which they in turn sell. They got KILLED in the fall of 2017 and 2018, so much so, their current strategy is to operate mostly as a go between between the customer and the carrier. Mark it up with a reasonable % and call it macaroni.

That's why I haven't sent in a contract bid since spring of '17. I was watching the rates uptick, and I said to myself, "Self, that's going to get me murdered in about six months." Last thing I wanted to do was take a bath on dozens if not hundreds of loads being locked in at late '16 rates.

Tangents aside, glad to see you're doing well and playing things smartly, @Misesian. I always enjoy reading you guys' owner/operator threads because it gives me a better understanding of your guys' side of the market. So, thanks!
