I choose to go to a PTDI certified school, paid for it myself, and then I would not be beholden to a company for the cost of training, and be able to move on if the company and I did not get along.

I have made Stevens work for me. They are not the easiest company to work for, and at times the thought process in Dallas leave alot to be desired, and make no sense from a drivers point of view.

Me and my new Driver Manager are off to a bad start. Wednesday I will show her that rick and payroll disallowed the turn around miles for the repower in amarillo.

then I get sent to Liberal KS for a load that will not be ready until Thursday night. And she sees nothing wrong with that. I will only have 1900 miles this week, which means I make less than a company driver this week. I will clear maybe $300 for the week.

Calling meat and trying to get a different load, did no good either. So I dropped the trailer at National, so that I am off duty, bobtailed, and can do what I want for 2 days while hanging out in Liberal KS.

trying to make the best of a bad situation, and not make it worst by over voicing my current displeasure.

That is just a pile of crap to do that to a lease driver, 2 days waiting to be loaded! I think you are correct, give it a couple of weeks and see if this is a trend or just one load gone bad. If it continues I would be looking at JCT or Decker out of Fort Dodge IA. I drove for Decker out of their Dallas yard and was home every 10-14 days and still getting great miles. Not much to do in Liberal KS, I know a few years ago there was bobtail parking close to the Applebees.

Liberal businesses know and have bobtail parking all over town.

will see what happens with this DM, but I am not looking to switch companies. But I will switch DM's if the trend continues.

How long has it been since you drove for Decker? Things have seriously changed there. No safety bonuses anymore, no mileage bonuses any more and starting pay for new drivers, no matter what experience, is .23cpm.

Hubbys best friend just quit there, because they took all of the bonuses away and didn't tell them, until they were expecting it. No memo with the paycheck, no nothing. Just took it away and then waited for the aftermath.

Pretty crappy way to treat your employees.

I left Decker in 2005, didn't want to, medical leave. They were just building a huge new corporate office in Ft Dodge at the time. Great shame if thats the case, a motivated company driver could pull in $60K pulling reefer and they also have a flatbed division. Maybe a change in the family running it or just plain greed. They had a lot of long term drivers that had been there forever.:biggrin_25513:

Hubbys buddy had been on a dedicated round, and they took him off that, then changed his DM, then the miles just dropped. The last week he was there, he got a whopping 900 miles, called every day asking for a load. They kept telling him that they didn't have any. Now if thats true, or not, who knows. But he was making considerably more than the new hires did per mile. So one can only speculate what they were doing. Especially since hubby and I would see their trucks all over the place.

hello... i have a few questions i was wondering about...

1st.... if leasing a truck from them...how much are you paying a week... cause i heard a horror story from prime...guy paying 1000.00 a week on his truck lease from the company...and had to work non-stop just to keep out of the whole and only got 1 day off a month to keep out of debt with the company.

question: is stevens any different and will i run into this if applying for a job with the company?

2nd.... now i looked into the training for CDL.... while it would be nice to go to a school for that... i can't afford to so looking for a company who will train me is the only option. i am not looking for a horror story like with Schneiders company after seeing those reviews.

question 2: what problems or issues have people had concerning this training... i am willing to go 100% for my training... and stay with a company... but i also am not looking to be set in debt thousands of dollars with a company either... is stevens a good choice?

question 3: is stevens a good company overall? from a personal stand point

I have made Stevens work for me. Others have too. They are a training company, and have additional rules that one must adhere to. Their pay is a little lower than other companies, but the do hire and train a lot of drivers.

For me they are a good fit.

so.... if i go to the school... sign a contract for a year to work with them... does that make me a company driver and without the need to lease a truck from them?

You still have the choice, of being a company driver, or a lease driver. If you run hard, they will pressure you to be a lease operator. You can just say no if you want to.

Check with the guys over in the aviary, as to how long the contract is if you go to their school as I have heard different things, but have no first hand knowledge as is it one year or three years. I have heard both.
