All I can say is ask lots of questions of any company you might work for. If they answer them to your satisfaction, then give that company a try. NO company is a good fit for everyone, and what works for me, might not work for you.

My choices were servilely limited by where i live, as getting me home, and back out again is a problem. Stevens was willing to work with me on that issue. And staying out 5 to 7 weeks at a time is okay with me.

TLeaHeart - I pulled into a Love's today in TN next to a beautiful Black T660 Stevens Truck. I hung out a little while but never saw the driver - was just wondering if it was you? Truck number was 9413. I'd post a pic but dont know how too get them attached.

TD - No, I went with Millis. I have been in training since May 17th. Just saw the Stevens truck at a TS while training with Millis. I have a thread in the "DAC" reports section titled "My Millis Experience".

TD: Enjoyed reading your posts and I have given a lot of consideration about joining Stevens before I read your posts. I realize they are a "training" company and I heard a decent one. I have been offered to attend their school in Dallas, and was wondering if it was really worth it all. I know each company has their disadvantages/advantages and their own horror stories from drivers, etc.....I really believe it is based on one's ability and determination. Each company will have a different fit for the individual. I think it is what you make of it that counts. So with that in mind.....just an honest opinion if you had to go through it all again, would you choose Stevens? If so, why? If not, why? Also if anyone is out there who went to training at Stevens, can you give any insight to instructors, training methods and/or such? Thanks for reading this and look forward to hearing from you and reading more of your posts. Safe trucking out there!

    truckerdaddy24 Thanks this.

After all I read good and bad I am still interested in Stevens. I have a few questions about them to narrow my search. Hope you all can help.

As a Solo OTR Company Driver living in Houston...

Whats the chances of getting a Peterbilt instead of the KW or which is better with them ?

Can you take the truck home ?

Can a rider (my wife) ride with me 90% of the time ? (after training of course).

Do they have a training class in Houston and or terminal ?

Please answer professionally. Thank you for all your support.

Maverick77 I appreciate the kind words, To tell you the truth I'm still in school, I have a posting here about my training at my CC title Glendale Community College I was not impressed with Stevens with the way the recruiter doesn't even have the time to remember who she had left a message with and to argue with me that she had spoken with my "Mother" when I knew she had not and not to admit to her mistake, I was also turned off when I hear of them pushing their L/O program to rookies right off the trainers trucks, This to me is a death trap, along with trying to learn the running and how to do everything once you are "Freed" from your trainer you have to really bust some tail to keep those payments up, I feel once you fall behind on that your goose is cooked so to speak, I'm going with Watkins Shepard they don't push the L/O because they don't even support the program, They have company drivers and O/O nothing else, They do run teams but that is not forced, There are companies that are going to 100% teams, I think that is crazy as a teams needs to run longer runs to make the same amount of money that a solo would make, I like W/S because after my sachooling I go to Missoula to there head quarters and learn their system and the way they do things, If I am comfortable with going into a truck on my own away I go in my own truck as a company driver with my first load, None of this trainer holding your hand while you back into the tight spot but if you take it easy till you are comfortable then there will be no issues. They run a little older equipment but they take good care of it and keep you running, I would rather work for a company who would buy 2 gently used trucks for $120K then one nice shiney brand new off the lot new truck that has all of the break in issues every truck has, I think this is good thinking. They pick and choose there equipment, They don't just buy from anyone. This is why I'm going to W/S. Thanks. TD.

Well said TD, Watkins and Shepard is a great company starting from the recruiters. I feel very comfortable, plus thanks to this board I have talked to 3 of W/S drivers, 2 who have been there less than 90 days and 1 who has been there for 7 months. I have them as facebook friends and in my cell, we text and chat like I am already an employee. I am very comfortable with my decision. I like Stevens I put an application in and am on the list for orientation but W/S just has its stuff together. Good luck to everyone.

Slim on the peterbilt as you are training. Slim at first, as all peterbilts go to the alliance side first, and then after 300,000 miles they may go to the company side.

As a company driver, no you may not take the truck home, you must secure it at a Stevens approved lot. In houston, there is a drop lot on the outerloop one exit down from the loves.

Yes your wife may ride with you after training, provided you have been a safe driver.

Yes stevens trains in Houston, don't know the name of the school. Stevens has only ONE terminal, in Dallas. They rent space at drop yards around the country, and the web site calls them terminals.

Ask questions, get satisfactory answers. Stevens will train you, but they do have some bad over the road trainers.
