What TruckerTurbo wrote, he wrote in 2005. Long long time ago - but I can still remember...
I don't know if he was just plain wrong, or if the rules have changed since then, but FMCSR 383.23 doesn't say anything at all about it being illegal to go to a different state for your CDL.
383.23 just says, basically:
you are limited to one driver's license
the testing must meet FMCSA standards
You may obtain a non-resident CDL if you live where FMCSA hasn't approved the CDL testing/certification (or has prohibited the issuance of CDLs)
Learner's permit:
Considered a valid CDL so long as:
Permit holder is accompanied by person with a valid CDL
permit holder either holds a valid state DL, or has that state's normal DL tests
permit holder does not operate a CMV carrying hazmat.
For the purposes of initially obtaining your CDL, you are legally domiciled in the school's state. It doesn't matter that you are there for only 4-5 weeks, it's the legal condition that matters. Then, as soon as you graduate, you return to your home state and swap out for a CDL issued there. (if you don't, THEN you can run into trouble.) Typically, you have 30 days in which to convert to your home state's license. After that, if you get stopped, it's going to depend on how grumpy the LEO is as to whether he writes you up for it.

To all those who wish to defend Stevens Trans, I'll say that I'm glad you found a company that you enjoy and your tollerance for B.S. is astounding. My one question is that if Stevens is so good, why do they shield their dispatchers with code locked doors and windows with only a small slot to get passed paperwork through. Other than that, you call them from a house phone on the wall. All of the large companies have a lot of B.S., but Stevens seemed to go overboard. Maybe they've improved since I worked there.
Voodoo Pyg Thanks this. -
Knowing not a whole lot, besides what I have seen here, prudence dictates that more information out there is better than none. Stevens is now hiring, including doing the 'training you for the CDL' thing, here in New England. To see the ad's it is almost a hysterical mania that they are going thru in order to find and get drivers
.
With diesel at $4.15 / gal here in Maine (and no end in sight), and seeing Stevens going to these lengths to find and train drivers, can anybody shed somelight on just what is going on w/ Stevens ? Are all their O/O's just parking and freight backing up to the point that Stevens is are going thru a mass hiring frenzy to clear their contracts and terminals ? This sounds a lot like what PRESTON- 151 went thru just before they, literally, closed the doors on a Friday afternoon and then declared bankruptcy and filed Chap. 7, simultaneously, Monday morning w/no warning to anyone. Drivers stranded at stops w/ no way to get fuel (all fuel cards went belly up), a lot of trucks stranded w/ no way to get home and some people were even stranded out on I-70 (Goodland Kansas) and 90 (anybody been in Montana at midnight w/ no moon!) w/ no dispatchers to get instructions from concerning on-board freight deliveries or dead-head instructions.

I have 2 more weekends till I finish an independent school here in GA. I decided I did not want to go to Stevens and be bound by their contract after they trained you. I am scheduled to go to their orintation on June 28th 2008 and then start with a trainer. They really seem to want me to come to Dallas even though I decided not to go to their school. This contradicts the fact that others say they only want the money from their school and expect you to quit still owing. I guess this is my question, Is Stevens an ok company to work for if you already have your cdl? Any help would be appreciated

it's alright i used to work for them back in 06 i even went threw their driving school it's pretty top notch. i liked it i met my co-pilot(team driver) their but i quit and the only reason i did was because of family problems. stupid mistake.any way if you want to learn a little bit about this company look me up on youtube under truckermojo. i have a cuople videos on their and for the record I'AM NOT A RECRIUTER . i am a real driver over 600,000 miles under my belt with 1 non preventable accident. and it's all thanks to the training i got from the stevens training program and my own commen sence. but it's a pretty good outfit to work for hell im headin back on june 8'th so i'll see you around the yard or something.

you have driv'n for 2 years I see so based on that this how fast you must be go'nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
81 mph times 13 hours a day equal 1,053 per day.
Running 5 and a half days to stay within your 70 would egual 5,791.50 a week.
5,791.50 times 52 weeks equals 301,158 a yearwhere do I sign up at I CAN'T DRIVE 55
May'b you run teamsnow that I would belive

wow i guess some people are illiterate or some just dont listen i don't work for them anymore i do run with another company local state runs. i'am glad to see that you can do math and add large sums of numbers. but i dont run 5 days i run my 8 days just like all other drivers and i do it safe . unlike some people that are with companys that have their truck's governed at 55 mph. my truck is opened all the way cuz i own my own rig. i don't worry about having the company take money out of my pay for damaging their equipment. unlike werner and j.b hunt , swift and etc etc. i just ahte the fact that all these drivers want to pawn off their bad expeireances and blame the company for screwing them over. every job is different . hell as a company driver i was working for peanuts and now i work to keep my peterbilt in good working condition. so if you want to knock on how you think you're the best driver and you can back in to any hole or if you want to brag on about how you never got in an accident and tried to lie you're way out of it then save you're breath because the only person that give's a flying crap is the person that is dumb in enough to beleive it.
