At my brother's house....he has spent a lot of $$$ on making his drive accessible for his portable parking lot...paved, just sealed within the past week...beautiful horseshoe-shaped drive so he can pull in and drive around and right back out. Beautiful place on a 2 lane highway, this drive is right in front and adjacent to his home...no mistaking that this is NOT a public truck use drive.

Look up and here comes a Stevens Transport freight hauler (with trailer) turns right in at pretty good speed, grabbing gears and with plenty of room to go around my bro's Pete, falls off the edge of the blacktop into the flood-soaked landscaped yard rutting it up like a bulldozer. Still grabbing gears, this guy had his eye on the horseshoe turnaround and never let up. Tearing up lawn and flowers and landscaping like it was of no concern to him. Out the drive and he's now achieved his u-turn and headed back the opposite way. The chase is on but there is now a Maryland state trooper between the Stevens driver and my bro and he chooses not to speed but keeps Stevens in his sights. The Stevens driver had apparently made the wrong turn off I-95 and went north instead of going south to the Flying J at North East, MD. Anyway, the chase ends at the Flying J....out pops this young punk, jerri-curled up bouncing around all ####y and begins with "Don't start cussin' me!!". He knew good & well what he had done...don't give a hoot about it either. It apparently is all about him. Had it been my place, my lawn, my moment, I would have engaged without thinking. But bro is a little more collected and chose to go the other way...truck number, details, immediate call to safety and anyone else he could muster at Stevens Transport.

Who trains these fools? What kind of slob places an idiot driver in a truck and turns him loose on the world? I don't know the scope of ownership and operation of Stevens Transport...maybe it's Joe Blow Stevens, 3 rd generation fool, hired a "manager" to take all the heat he's going to get from idiot drivers around the country and he sits on a houseboat somewhere sipping Kentucky bourbon. Maybe so, maybe not. But I would bet that the ownership is disengaged from the actual goings on because if they cared, even one iota, they would never place a raw arse in a seat and turn him loose to figure it out. The kid is fortunate...very fortunate. If I could have thought fast enough and blocked the drive on the exit end, bro would have owned the truck and trailer and the cargo, at least for a great amount of time to teach Stevens Transport they would never have another driver pull a stunt like that.

We will see if Stevens pays for the damage. I don't care how they do it, but it actually should come every single penny out of jerri-curls low hangin' back pockets...every penny.

    IDIOTS!!!

    Well I'll take that bet.
Steven Aaron, founder, still turns up fairly often. Four of his kids work there and run the place for the most part. All four have CDLs and had to drive for six months before being allowed inside.
Doesn't make them an experienced driver, but gives them a bit of insight into what a driver lives.
I'll also bet you'll get paid.
And this driver will be (if not already) routed back to Dallas for a sit down with the Safety department.
Depending on the outcome, will determine how much of this damage will come out his pocket directly. If it's as you say, I'll bet 100%.
Now to your original question. Who trains these guys?
    Well for one, I do.
But people being as they are, it seems there is always some Jackarse that doesn't follow the rules, pay attention or use common sense.
I'll bet you can find one in every company.
    Glad your brother caught up.
Believe me. Stevens will not take this lightly.

I'm not trying to hijack this thread- but I ended up in a diesel repair shop/towing company in Union, Missouri- right next to I-44. While I was at the desk on the phone, noticed a series of pics displayed under the glass desk top. A Schneider driver tried to drive around the back of a fast food restaurant in the middle of the night. He tried to take a 53' trailer through the fast food drive-thru. After he demolished the "9'1'" height bar over the drive and took out the menu and speakers, he tore down the corner of the building by trying to drag his trailer around the brick wall.

The drive was only narrow enough for autos and pickups- even a bobtail wouldn't have fit back there. The guy in the shop laughed and said the driver was still trying to drag his trailer through the building when the Police showed up.

Remember, People- a CDL is only giving you an opportunity to become good at a trade. Some people think a CDL means they are the master of a trade.

<<<Believe me. Stevens will not take this lightly>>>

Thank you, Emulsified. I have been around quite a while and I have seen a lot...I'm sure I'll see more. Each new day brings new opportunities. But there are times that things like this just knock you down and take you back a bit. A "chain" is only as strong as it's weakest link and this guy, turned loose with a 40 ton excavator, has left a lasting impression from the entire neighborhood about Stevens Transport and frankly any other large carrier that seemingly has trouble keeping hind ends in their seats for whatever reason. And this is a neighborhood of trucking folks. If the guy was in a bad place, made a wrong turn...stopped on the shoulder, got out and asked if he could use the drive to turn around...certainly! We are not that kind of folks that are anti-truck, obviously. We have trucked for generations.

We will see how they handle this. I'm not very confident, not because of Stevens, but because of the corporate attitudes I personally have encountered as of late. If this guy remains in the seat of a truck without extensive character re-evaluation, remedial re-training or something...Stevens continues to be as weak as he is.

Pennsylvania Turnpike Authority...collector tells me I have been on the toll road too long after I took my 10 hour break at a service plaza. I was on the 'pike for a total of around 12.5 hours, IIRC...10 of them being a break. I made the call on the guy. PA Turnpike gals tell me they are very interested in this case and WILL DEFINITELY get back to me...in writing no less. Not another word. Not a call. Not a memo. Not an email. Forgotten. They do not care. I will disappear.

Cummins Crosspoint Louisville branch...after service repair, my truck is driven to the back lot, pulled in away from lights, not backed in so as someone, anyone might glance in that direction every now & then, the tech or ??? leaves my truck completely unlocked and unsecured in a place where gates are not monitored, there are zero security..no cameras, no guards, no patrol...not even a sign that says no POV in this area and they (Cummins) admittedly has had many theft and security problems in the past here. Stryker cb and all accessories stolen, left wires hanging. Took other items and even took my pillowcases to carry the loot in. Not a call, not a single response. I will disappear and they do not want me or my work back in their shop apparently because this is what they are screaming to me with their silence. It is all about saving someone's job locally and then the shareholders interests and never letting this kind of incident make it's way up the chain of command. They underestimate me.

One could go on & on. I hope Stevens is different and if they are, it will be noted, but nobody's holding their breath around here.

Unfortuneately, you have met an example of the next generation. It seems to be their home training or lack there of and not the driver training that they have gone through. And worse yet, I do not expect it to get any better in my lifetime.
    .
I work for a local company driving a straight truck. No, I will not name this sorry company for obvious reasons. The company has a contract with a local correctional institution for work release personnel. Some of these "young boys" demand respect all the while disrespecting you. At the risk of seeming to be an old, senile and crazy old man, this attitude does not fly with me. They think that they are entitled to everything; nothing has to be earned. The only property that must be respected is their stuff. Yeah, right.
    .
When they threaten me as sometimes happens, I respond with "Try it and see what happens to you".... No takers so far.

I've seen this same attitude myself in this generation. They seem to think they're owed something - or everything. The problem is never them, it's the system being against them. They didn't do anything wrong, it's the system not being the way they think it should be. They can do whatever they want, everyone else is wrong. They have a RIGHT to a good job, and then that job is THEIRS, they can do whatever they want on that job, the owner/boss has no right to correct or fire them. The job should come to them, they shouldn't have to go out and find and compete for a job.
It's like the world's common sense and sense of right and wrong have all been flipped.
Like the union guys who raided and ransacked that port in Washington. They claim those jobs belong to that union. Who says? Since when does the owner of a company not have rights and control over what union, if any, he has on his property at his company? They held the security guys hostage for crying out loud. A judge ordered the union to stop using illegal tactics, but the same union guys went right back and did it again, and worse this time. They destroyed property and tons of grain, and threatened police who responded to the riot. Insanity. The judge shouldn't have issued another identical warning, he should have issued arrest warrants for breaking and entering private property, destruction of same, theft, vandalism, terroristic threatening, hostage taking, criminal endangerment, inciting to riot, disregarding an order of the court, unlawful assembly, and threatening law enforcement officers. Oh, and disruption of commercial-scale food distribution is a 'terrorist activity' under the PATRIOT act, so they should be charged as terrorists, and if they do it again, shot on site, not just for threatening law enforcement officers with violence while holding a weapon as the officer is doing his job.

Now, to put the thread back on track...
That driver is probably cleaning out his truck and staying at the hotel while he goes through classes and is re-evaluated. If he's lucky, and does very well, he might return from his 30 days out with another trainer and be given another truck. If he's not so lucky or doesn't do well with that trainer, he'll probably still be on unemployment and voting for Obama next year.

    There's one in every barrel.:biggrin_25513:

    A follow-up on this thread.

I read the actual letter of response from Stevens Transport concerning my brother's reporting of this driver running through his drive/lawn/private property this week. The letter stated that after a thorough investigation of "his claim", they were denying it. First, my bro did not even make a $ claim. I would have if it were me but he's a much nicer guy. The Stevens driver was, and apparently still is, an idiot that has no business in a truck. Bro is an owner/op himself and has been for 30 years. He just wanted to report the idiot driver to Stevens in hopes that one more fool might be taken off the highway or at the very least...disciplined to the point of correcting his ways. Secondly...thorough investigation? Words mean something. At least they are supposed to. I suspect a Stevens Transport thorough investigation consisted of hanging up the phone after the call from my bro and sending a message to the "form letter" department to send one out to the address bro had left.

One word to describe Stevens Transport's concern for their company trucks damage to personal and private property and their drivers "KMA...I'll do what I want" attitude: Unconcerned.

No matter if it's trucking or making potato chips...there is a face that inevitably is responsible for the people they employ. Whether they refer to them as employees or associates or whatever...they surround themselves with people that make up their company or corporate work force and they are responsible for their actions. I have a bad attitude when it comes to expectations of these companies taking responsibility for their actions but that bad attitude comes from many years of experience working around and being directly affected with their employees. Looks like my bad attitude is justified once again. I'm batting 99.9% with my bad attitude detector. (Schneider is the only company that ever took care of a problem one of their drivers caused without a lot of hassle. My brand new trailer was run over by a Schneider driver in a truck stop parking lot crushing the right rear light box and ripping wires...of course the driver run off but another driver saw it happen and told me when I came out and did a walk around noticing the lights laying on the ground. Other driver told me the Schneider driver stopped and gathered the debris and politely layed it in a pile by my trailer before he drove off. Schneider paid me almost immediately after supplying them with images and a claim. I was very surprised.) In my brother's instance, Lil brother was a kinder man and got more of the same. I would not have been so kind but at least I would have had skin on my knuckles, jerri-curl juice splattered on my clothes and maybe a smelly boot tip if I could have penetrated that exaggerated distance from the supposed normal crotch in his low-hanging britches to the actual crotch area of the punk driver . At least I would have gotten more satisfaction than a form letter denying a claim that was not even a claim. He never asked for a single penny but his landscaper is still repairing the damage.

Thanks to Stevens Transport for re-enforcing my perception of today's corporate trucking attitudes...and for the new found disgust I feel every time I see one of those dark blue Stevens Transport trucks.

    Smaggs and 123456 Thank this.
