Stevens Transport---Who Trains These Guys?

    For the most part companies are probably as you say, Dryver...but I did have an incident where a Schneider driver ran over the rear light boxes of my trailer and to make a longer story short, the girl handling my call and claim paid immediately, if not a little sooner. I was very surprised but it made me look at Orange in a different light. As for these dark blue trucks...just from appearance, etc over the years, I had this impression that Stevens Transport might be a notch above...turned that all around once I discover the truth behind each and every Stevens truck on the road. OK...I'm not knocking all the hard working legit folks driving the trucks but the people that accept no responsibility for what their trucks/drivers do need a waking up. Not all their drivers are fools but I have no reservation in labeling this particular one as a menacing idiot.

    A wise man or woman in a position of management or ownership will surround themselves with like employees and associates. A fool will employ anyone, any kind and anything in their business. This applies to any kind of business or charitable work organization. Even a forum like this...you get assistance from like-minded qualified folks for moderation...it applies all over the place. Something breaks down when you make the decision to just fill seats with whatever and then begin to blame the worker, work force, regulations, etc for your own neglectful, greedy purposes. If they ain't qualified and presenting my idea of what a service oriented company should look like...forget them and let 'em flip burgers...not that there's anything wrong with flipping burgers. They just should not be in a position to take a 40 ton truck-trailer through a private homeplace. Come to think of it...I don't want him flipping my burgers either. I'm about to get political so I'm gonna shut up.

    I agree and I know all that, Mardet. Thanks for your reply. My bro is a good man and a hard worker, takes care of his stuff and makes his own way. He don't want to be involved in litigation and I wouldn't really either. I know this is the world we live in but that is no excuse for not doing the right thing. Don't care if the norm today is "sue 'em"...it has been said you have to get in their pocket to make them understand. I know there are other ways and it would have been much easier, cheaper and simpler for Stevens Transport to do the right thing from the start.

    A little story into why insurance claims can be such a pain. And it doesn't mitigate for one minute, the drivers' responsibility for your brother's loss.
    My student pulled out of a parking space and clipped the mirror on the truck next to us.
    We took pictures, traded information and I gave him the insurance department's phone number.
    The only damage was to the mirror. I checked carefully for scatches, twisted mirror mounts or any other damage. I took quite a few pictures.
    Frankly, I was surprised the trailer only clipped the mirror.
    Three weeks later the insurance department calls me to verify the damage to the fender and door!
    The claim came in more than two weeks AFTER the incident and included a badly damaged fender and door.
    I resent the origininal pics that clearly showed no damage.
    So here we have a case of the injured party trying to inflate the claim.
    According to the adjuster, the pictures supplied by the claimant looked as if he'd sideswiped a post or stantion.
    So I'm sure PART of the reason for slow claims from companies revolve around the unscrupulous actions of a few trying to cash in on an insurance claim.

    I understand that probably happens all the time, Emulsified. But, respectfully, that kind of wrong behavior has nothing to do with this situation at all. And any company, insurance or trucking, that tries to hide from responsibility by even commenting about wrongful deeds like this would be better off by just simply doing the right thing and being a man (or woman, if that's the case) and standing up, taking care of the problem they created. The point I'm trying to make is that, inevitably, the Stevens Transport management is responsible. Yeah, I think the driver that did it was a pure nut and again...a fool...but regardless of the driver, someone put that arse in a seat and turned him or her loose on the public.

    They can hide from view in Texas or wherever but that one big blue truck ripping up personal property across the country has the name all over it. I suspect if there were some outstanding performing drivers, dispatchers, agents working under the Stevens Transport name, the management would be quick to stand up and pat each other on the back and create a glossy ad in a trucking publication in support for their positive deeds. But when it's not necessarily good publicity, they don't really want to know about that and slink back into obscurity for a while...evidenced by denying a claim that was never made. I guess maybe they felt a regular guy would absolutely make a claim. They don't know us folks. They only know what their fears drive them to know. Claims involve legalities..lawyers and such, usually.

    While we are posting individual insurance circumstances as points to be made that maybe are not relevant...

    Years ago, I'm sitting on my front porch alone...reading a newspaper enjoying the rain around me while I rocked on the porch. A blast of lightning, huge thunder clap and I just about jumped out into the front yard. It had struck something just behind me. Investigating, it blew most all the phone lines off the back of the house, knocked out every television in the house among other items. The lightning had struck an antenna mast, traveled down the length of it, plowed up the ground as it ran toward my carport, somehow underneath grabbed onto the rebar under the concrete of the carport, and exited through the concrete, blowing a small hole out just under my boat trailer tire, destroying the tire. Who would believe lightning struck a rubber tire and blew it out? Anyway...insurance is called. Comes and does adjustments. Sends me a check. Big name insurance company that rhymes with Rate Farm...the pricks. Large projection screen TV in living room...he wants a TV repair guy and see if it can be fixed. OK. TV guy says no way...it's gone. After a while with no TV and shopping for what we were gonna replace it with, I decide to plug it back in and just see if we might get some kind of pic, distorted or not. To my surprise, it fired up and played rather well. I called my insurance agent...told him I had a problem. He said "is the check not enough to cover the problem?" I sez, No, the check is fine...matter of fact, the $400.00 you allowed for that TV (much more expensive set than that but I had not said a word) ...I need to send some $ back to you. The TV is working fine now. Agent is quiet. Finally, says, I've never had a request like this. I told him I would have it no other way but...keep it noted in case the set goes bad in the next little bit. He agrees, thanks me and sends out a letter to me on Rate Farm letterhead proclaiming my honesty and integrity. I still have that letter but I didn't need it to know what Mom & Dad instilled me as 1 of 8 kids. I send him back 400 bucks. 2 weeks later, I receive a letter from Murfreesboro, TN headquarters for Rate Farm stating that they are cancelling my insurance. Family property my Dad built and had insurance with these nutsacks for over 30 years, never a claim made and now I own the property, lightning strikes and they are cancelling my policy. I am somewhat perturbed and scratch off a nice letter revealing what their agent had boasted of my integrity and honesty and that I had access to a local access TV station about such matters and they called me right away...lying to me and saying that the cancel letter was a mistake and it was meant for another property, not mine. Liars. Scum. Covering their own backsides is all they were trying to do because they knew what a public relations nightmare could unfold with this if I did indeed do what I had threatened to do. I told them to KMA and went with another insurance provider, more coverage for interior property and a lot less money for premiums.

    Why the story? It applies about as much as another story...and the comparison is about less than honest folks as compared to honest people.

    Mom always chided us and told us not to brag...I felt a little condemnation as I write this coming from my late Mother but I'm thinking bragging about doing the right thing is not wrong. It's standing up for something right.

    I read that a company can only become self insured if they maintain a very good safety rating for a minimum time period. I also heard it in one of the workshops over this summer.
