I tried building one out of PVC and bailing wire. It failed miserably, lol

That "Foxpole", as I call it, has about a 6-7' stinger (I can't remember), and I made the coil from a length of 1-0 solid core insulated copper wire. I had to bend it around a pipe in my vise with a hand mall! I drilled solid brass blocks to that size and soldered the wire in. Drilled and tapped the blocks to mount the brass pipework in and out of the cylinder.
Kinda clunky, but it makes a great ground plane for the stinger. I have about 10" of adjustment, and can tune to 26mhz and up to lower 29. I also use military spec FAT coax. Same as on the shuttle.
Surprised the tar outta me, really. It worked best on my lightbar over my giant metal toolbox I used to have on there, but it kept hitting all the tree branches, and one stoplight...!

Sounds like your to close to the cab. Also your coax ideally should be either 9, 18 or 36 feet. First relocate your antenna or switch to a center load like a Wilson .

36' is a bad idea. It will give you a false reading, considering 36' is 1 wavelength.
