Can you drive for two companies at the same time? When you have your ow authority as an owner operator and drive as an employee of yourself can you also drive for another company (not lease)(as a company driver for them).....I am not talking lease but as a company driver on both.
What if I am not sure yet if I want to suspend my authority and I want to try out being a driver for someone else and see how it is. What if they have the contract saying that I can't work for anyone else? Do I have to quit on myself or fire myself before I drive for them?
How do I do this paperwork wise? And if I do that does that mean I need to suspend my authority before working for them? And then if it doesn't work out do I have to reemploy myself by filling out another job application and doing another preemployment drug screen for my company? I am so confused any help you guys out there give me is really really appreciated.
I am just trying to get all things in order correctly. I wish someone wrote a book on how to exit this industry properly.

If you are not actively working for yourself, ie driving or dispatching, then you are not working, authority or not. You will have to fill out log books. As long as every log states all your on duty time being with them, then technically you are working for them. Your business is on hold.
By law, you can not actively work for yourself and log it as off duty. The other company is covering themselves as to drivers working for others and running out of hours, or working and not reporting those hours on the logs. This would put the driver and company at risk if an accident happens. They are doing what they can to keep themselves safe. -
Is there something special that I need to do to put my company on hold. Like fill out certain paperwork?

As long as you are not actively working there, you should be OK. If there is no income, there is no work. If you are looking to de-activate your company, someone with more knowledge will hopefully answer, as I never had my own authority.

You're making much a-do about nothing. Lets say you wrecked your truck and it was repairable, but would take 2 months to fix. So in the interim, you work for your uncle to keep some $$ flowing in. Now, are you going to suspend your authority? What if you only want to work 9 months out of the year, and park your truck for 3 months? What if you fell on your keester and was off for 2 months recuperating?

So it is okay then to just park the truck and say I quit basically my own company? I think I understand now. My other problem is that it is a business with a business name and I will have invoices paid coming in about 30 days. Should I close the business but keep the authority? I just dont want to get into any hot water doing things wrong.

I never had my own authority, so I can't speak to that. When you get your own authority, isn't there some groundrules along with the paperwork? Such as "must haul so many loads" or, "must haul loads year around", or, "could become inactive etc. etc"? There are tons of O/O's on this forum who know the correct answers. I'm just kind of speculating and don't want to steer you wrong, but, it seems to me you cancel your authority/insurance, then sell your truck and tell your tax guy/CPA what you are doing and get on with your life.

I have a mc# number(no dot) and never thought of the need to redraw it. If you don't pay for your insurance , I'm pretty sure dot and mc will be notified and your authority will be suspended? May not be right way of doing things thou. I would look into only suspending everything, as you never know about tommorrow
