2006 columbia with Mercedes engine. After adding power to pull a little hill, the lights come on when I let up on the accelerator. If I then add power back in, the lights go off. once as I was coming into a town I did not add power back in and then the stop engine light began to flash. then the engine died.
The dealer says the computer is not showing any codes that would relate to my problem. Can't figure out what is wrong. Any Ideas out there?
Thanks Chuck

Check the engine wiring harness if there are no faults and its doing weird electrical things. A common weak spot, and the new harness is only $230.
Dont ask me how I know, as I also have a 06 Columbia.
MartinCharley345 Thanks this. -
Also, if near Altoona, stop by Detroit there and ask Jack to have a looksie at it.

Thanks Martin,
It,s in Waterloo where they are still trying to figure it out. I will pass along your thoughts.

Hmm, never heard good or bad about those guys.
Mine drove me nuts for a while. The turbo brake would put it into derate mode, it would miss and splutter at times, and it was showing a code for a 2 speed fan, when I have a single speed fan!
We tried different ECM's etc, and it turned out to be the wiring harness that goes into the ECM. That one had rubbed through where the clips hold the wires together, as it goes into the ECM.
I had another that rubbed through right behind the head, causing a no start situation there. Be worth checking both harness' and the crank sensor whhich is just a push fit IIRC.
Good luck!

I think there were no dash waring lights on after the engine shut down. I was going slow by then so pulled to the side and turned off the key. waited a minute started up and continued 15 miles to unload. With one or two more times of the lights coming on and then off as before. On the 70 mile drive to the shop while I was empty the light thing only happened one time.
Well the shop tried checking connections and what all else I don,t know. So I hauled a load this afternoon with nothing happening. ?????????? I guess it is fixed until it isn't.
Thanks everyone for the replies. If it acts up again we will have some ideas of where to look if there are no engine codes again.

We've got a bunch of them that have done the same thing. Either wiring harness is rubbed through and shorting out, or what happened to us if that the coolant sensor and the attached pigtail were bad, that solved our problem.
BTW, who are you working for in Waterloo? My brother and father own Pape Transfer out of Dubuque; always nice to see some local guys on the forum.Charley345 Thanks this. -
Thanks JDP
The lights came on a couple times yesterday in the first thirty miles after I got loaded. Then I hit a rough stretch of county road the shook the heck out of the cab and then no more lights the rest of the day. So I am really suspecting it is a short as you and others have suggested. The coolant sensor is of special interest because that was a code that did show up at the shop.
I own my tractor and lease on with Sully Transport hauling propane and anhydrous. Live east of Waterloo. Have seen Pape trucks around for as long as I can remember. I used to haul pigs to the Dubuque packing plant.
Thanks again, Chuck -
What exactly was the code? It's only about a $50 fix for the sensor and pigtail and maybe 5 minutes. Do them both at the same time, all the times we've done it the pigtail is bad too.
My grandpa started the company back in 56', been hauling tractors out of Waterloo for almost that long. -
Just an update for future reference.
After replacing the coolant level sensor and the short pigtail that connects to the main wiring harness I still had the same problem.
Turned out to be corrosion in the plug in of the main harness (where the short pigtail plugs in). It looked fine from the outside but once disassembled corrosion could be seen on one of the terminals. Stripped the wires back, crimped on new terminals, reassembled plug in. Two weeks running now with no problems.
Thanks to everyone for your help.
