I can count the number of times on one hand I've been parked on the shoulder in the last 34 years ....and it sure as hell wasn't for a nap !

On that stretch of I-81 the curves aren’t that sharp-it’s mostly rolling hills between Carlisle and Harrisburg. While it’s true the driver that was killed failed to negotiate the curve,at the same length the driver that was parked on the shoulder should’ve known better and was taking a big risk parking somewhere where he shouldn’t have! And states dealing with this issue have warned drivers REPEATEDLY about parking on shoulders of highways(especially I-81-drivers on that highway are signing their own death warrants) and the consequences(physically and legally)!
Those no parking signs on the shoulder aren’t a suggestion. Yet some drivers can’t take a hint!

The should is for emergency parking only. That's why we are supposed to put out the orange triangles.

Even in emergency stops on the shoulder, the places these guys choose to stop us getting ridiculous! Example: Truck on the shoulder, downgrade, and stops next to a guardrail and thus crowds the fog line. Even if the truck was dead, another 100 yards of coasting would have left them in wider spot and feet from the fog line. Yet, every day we see this stupid crap!

Critical thinking is getting to be very rare!

*cue the 400 drivers rushing to type their defense of these morons *

It sucks but it is what it is. I know breakdowns happen but I would absolutely avoid parking on shoulder where the is a curve.

They may not issue any tickets, or minor ones, but when the lawsuits are filed, the driver who was parked illegally has put his company in a non defensible position.
I am familiar with 2 cases, drivers I know personally, both of them good drivers, generally smart people who did not exercise good judgement, parked on the exit ramp and were hit. One involved a fatality.
Both were settled out of court long before it got to the point of a jury trial. Both drivers were fired.
Whatever justification you may conjure up for the driver who was parked, it will be a hard sell in the courtroom.

A lot of these drivers are forgetting that we’re a lawyer happy society and these trucks are seen as 18 wheeled ATMs. Any incident/accident involving these trucks will have lawyers salivating at the glands.

I don’t think the guys who do this sort of stuff or any of the other crazy tricks we see Dailey are even on this forum
Maybe a couple but not many
so the news flash won’t be read or understood by the ones who actually need it

    I agree whole heartedly!
And also the number of “objects” I have run in to on the shoulder after over forty years of driving is zero.
How is even possible that drivers run off the highway and blame what ever they hit as being the cause of the accident??
I’m sure the the company and insurance carrier of the driver who ran off the road holds the parked object responsible for the collision lol.
