I have 1 mil gen liability and 1 mil auto liability and 500k cargo. It’s about 23k a year insurance cost. If that is truly your operating cost I don’t see it as a viable business. Cheap freight hauler aren’t the issue, operating cost are. Jmo.

She technically doesn't get paid, it's a wife/husband team. 3 trucks is the magic number for everything, one truck covers all the costs and the other two are profit, assuming you have drivers in them.Another Canadian driver Thanks this.

And I bet you have to get a rider occasionally for loads with a value in excess of $500K - considering the cost of a new D8 is probably well over a million now.
Every 15K? That's nuts.Another Canadian driver, God prefers Diesels and bumper Jack Thank this. -
I actually only have 100k cargo, the rest is the same as you (I raise my cargo as needed.) Where do you cut the operating cost then? I could do it for $0.60/mi less if the government left me alone, I could net more money if HOS didn't exist and if receivers didn't close at 1300-1400 hours. But when I put a 40ft load on my truck, I expect it to pay enough for me to profit.Another Canadian driver Thanks this.

That's recommended for routine hauling, I'm not going to sell this truck when I'm done, it will go on the ranch and serve another purpose, but still that's what it takes to make it last.
I just call my agent and she raises the limit to what I need above that for that load.Another Canadian driver and Oxbow Thank this. -
I do. But it’s cheaper to do a add on rider policy than to keep a 1 mil cargo. The jump from 250 to 500 wasn’t bad, but 500 to 1 mil was steep.Another Canadian driver and Oxbow Thank this.

The insurance on a $200K plus tractor and $150K trailer ought to cost a lot more than a $70K pickup and $30K trailer. And, his cargo is five times as much as yours.Another Canadian driver and bumper Jack Thank this.

Yeah, I looked into it, wasn't needed for enough loads to make it viable as a business decision. Although, when we get the detach for the Freightshaker it will probably get bumped to 500k permanently with riders as needed.Another Canadian driver Thanks this.

10k per year with work comp. BTW my trailer cost 55K low pro step with a gooseneck.
It went up this year and last for no reason other than they could. Shopped around, next best was 15k per year just for auto and cargo, no liability or work comp.Another Canadian driver Thanks this. -
First thing I would do would be to get the miles up. 75,000 miles a year is 6200 miles a month. 1500 and some change a week and you are wanting to keep $2400 out of that? That’s not going to happen. Get the miles a little or just one extra load a week and it will make a dramatic difference.merv85, Another Canadian driver and Oxbow Thank this.
