I turn 23 years old on April 29th 2015 so next year will be the best time to start school and that's when all driving points will be cleared off my license. So far I go with my uncle on his trips from Cali to Az. So I know pretty much everything already except one thing, i know a lot of you see truck drivers on the side of the road with the truck broken down or a flat tire or whatever the problem is. They might not need your help since they probably got a cellphone to call whoever they need but if they do need your help and you stop to give em a hand by letting them barrow your phone since theirs don't get signal and yours does. Will your carrier see that as a bad thing? Can you get fired for it? Since some trucks have computers nowadays that can track your speed, distance and all that stuff. I ask because back in the days when I was small I would see two trucks stopped not just one. The broken down and the one that stopped to help. Nowadays it's always just one.

Most drivers ask on CB to one broken down before stopping. Also MOST companies don't allow stopping on side of road as a sitting duck. I seen and heard drivers reporting others and they getting fired over it. So I suggest buy a reliable truck and don't worry about breaking down and being helped. :)

Not to mention the 14 hour window and HOS along with a tight schedule at times.

Welp...Heres the difference between Robot drivers and folks like me.

If a man or woman is broke down and needs assistance......i will be the one to stop, I did it since day 1.....Because I know if I ever needed help, Hopefully someone will assist too.

Forget the 'tight schedule' 'DOT slabba labba'......Doing whats RIGHT for another man is my only conscience.

High Risk?? Yeah thats the answer molded in everyone's skulls these days by our ever so truthful AP and News editorials...........

Fact of the matter is..............If I see you on the shoulder, You can bet im stopping to help If you need it. Besides,Why not save them a few bucks right?

Then Again, Im not your average driver either............I dont Hurry for anyone, And I exercise common sense and ethics, Whether it be Written into law or not

Heres the deal: I don't mind helping another driver. However, so many drivers nowadays have this mindset of "it's not my truck, they don't pay me to work on it." What's the point in stopping for a driver that's unwilling to get his hands dirty?

Most of the time you see a truck on the shoulder, it's because he's blown a tyre. If he has blown a steer, he's stuck. If he has super singles, he's stuck. If he has the regular tyres on his tandems and he's sitting on the side of the road, he is sitting there because of the "What If's". That's his choice, he could limp that truck to a safe haven if he wanted to. Why should I stop if a driver chooses to stay on the side of the road?

Contrary to popular beliefs, there are still some good hands out here that are willing to help. Want proof? Pull into a truckstop parking lot, open your hood and have some tools out. I will guarantee you that someone will volunteer to help you turn wrenches. Funny thing is, I have had company drivers who aren't allowed to do anything but drive their trucks ask me if they can turn wrenches because they are interested in learning the ways of the wrench. It is good to be mechanically inclined BEFORE you decide to buy your own truck.

Triple Six, I agree with your last paragraph but not the rest brother..
I always ask on the radio, when I see a guy on the side of the road, if they need a hand. Yes there are companies that tell their drivers not to work on the truck, and I have even heard rumors about companies that won't allow them to change a bulb! Come on, I am never going to sit on the side of the road, waiting for a mechanic to charge my company 100's just to do something I can do with a screw driver, socket, wrench or pliers. Maybe that has a simple problem but doesn't have that screw driver, wrench, socket or pliers. 99% of the time I don't receive an answer and the 1% of the time I do, 99% of those drivers don't need help. I had a turbo line come off, forget the name, air to air line I believe. The rubber coupling hose clamp came off. I got on the horn and asked for help because as you know, that truck was a giant paperweight at that point. I didn't wait long and a guy pulled over. Gave me a hanger and it didn't work perfect but, I was able to get to the TA just down the road and saved my company some money. I would have to do that if it was my truck so, I get in the habit.

You don't know it right now, but we are on the same page. Negro Modelo...that's the adult beverage for the night. I drink my next one in honor of the drivers who are willing to get their hands dirty.
