Do any of you who stay out and don't have a main base use storage facilities while OTR? I will be going OTR soon but don't want to keep my things at my parents' place any longer than I have to. If there is a particular chain of storage anyone could recommend I'd appreciate it. Will have to get a PO Box too.
Storage while OTR.

I'd say find one that might offer you truck parking as part of a package if you don't otherwise have any other optionRocknroller4 Thanks this. -
I just recommended do not use Public Storage (the nationwide chain) look for a locally owned place that works and you feel good about. Pay by the year if you can to save money and hassle
ExOTR, Longarm and Rocknroller4 Thank this. -
Yup. I'm with a local storage place and they're $20 or more cheaper than the national chains.

i would also invest in some pest traps like for ####roaches, and ants and such. once they get into your stuff, you will be taking them to your next place. keep everything wrapped in plastic if you can as well.
i'd also bug-bomb the area *storage unit* long before you take your stuff there.morpheus Thanks this. -
Depending on where in the country you will be storing your things you might want to look into climate controlled storage. In South Florida humidity is a big issue and you would be surprised how quickly mold and mildew can appear. Stuff like tools would probably be OK, but important documents or clothing and furniture would be at risk.
I have a climate controlled unit, but still have a couple of those damp-rid containers in there.Rocknroller4 Thanks this. -
Just a thought.
Might want to evaluate the value of what your storing and the cost to rebuy everything. It might come out cheaper to not pay the storage cost.
I only say this because this was the case with me many moons ago when I first went long haul. Plus I never had to think about whether someone broke in or whether an infestation happened while away.
What I forgot was that you need figure in the amount you would receive from the sale of said items.Last edited: Apr 12, 2016

I know a guy that just went and bought a back yard storage building and his brother let him put it in his back yard. They put it on a wooden floor. Big up front cost, but zero long term cost.
driverdriver Thanks this. -
A part of the formula I didn't mention was the amount of money from sale of items

Thanks for the suggestions.

I use The Public Storage chain and they are comparable to my local storage places, but they are nicer. The last local, place I went to charged more. But it was 2 blocks from my terminal. But it was old, had nice and it leaked all over.
It may be worth it to pay a little more to get something better.
