Unfortunately a lot of this #### will depend on your local state motor vehicle regulations, and every state's "truck rules" are a little different, making for a nice little hodge podge of confusion. Medical cards probably not since no CDL is required for 26,000 and under.
Straight box truck regulations (under 26,000 GVWR and NOT FOR HIRE)

You are partly correct. IFTA will not apply until you are over 26,001 pounds gross weight rating, but depending upon the state(s) you travel in you may need an apportioned plate as low as 10,001 pounds. AZ and MT come to mind, if I recall correct, AZ is 10,001 pounds and MT is 17,001 pounds.
As for private fleet vs. for-hire, no difference on the registration, fuel tax, weight distance taxes (NY,NM,OK), and compliance with other DOT regulations. -
Great informationARNEST Thanks this. -
I have a medical dot cards from when I use to work for somebody (box truck)
I’m trying to rent a box a truck
And get loads from brokers
All I’m hearing is MC .... what’s the difference -
I have 3 company straight trucks, one GVWR is >26000# and two at 33,000#. No IFTA on one but NY HUT on all three. You can't tell the light truck when all three are backed in. We had Penske build them at 102" wide but my 3 non-CDL owner operators don't look that much smaller either.

MC is motor carrier operating authority. It is your legal right to haul freight you so not own for compensation as a business. It is attached you tour US DOT number and requires proper insurance along with other compliance issues.
It isn't as simple as just renting a truck and hauling, the brokers (at least the ethical ones) can't give load to someone that is not an authorized motor carrier.
Here is a link to give you more information of the MC authority process.

I would like to input some information whilst driving Dot regulations. I am a hiker or professional transporter as an independent contractor. We move non cdl vehicles at the 26,000 pound limit. They are empty trucks not delivering any goods or carrying any loads but am still required to stop at weigh stations to comply with DOT.
I was driving a Ford 550 fitted with a dump tilt tray and bypassed the weigh station. Next I look in the mirror and a state trooper is pulling me over. I was escorted to go back to the weigh station and received a $75 ticket for bypassing it.
It is not worth bypassing them and now evening it is 1 pound over 10,000 you see required by law to enter it. -
Well I don’t get what you are saying, the 26,000 lb limit has to do with two things, one is a cdl and the other fuel taxes that are apportion.
Anything over 10k should scale, and log.brian991219 Thanks this. -
Depends on the state. Some are all cmv's. Some are all cmv's over a specific weight, some are all vehicles over a weight
Just read the signs and do what they say. If in doubt pull in and verify.Last edited: Oct 5, 2021
