Hi there, I was wondering, can straight cutting oil (for precision machining) be used as diesel fuel?

I bought out a liquidation that included 17 55-gal drums of the stuff and if it can be used as diesel fuel, I figured I'd put it up in the classifieds here or ebay motors or something. If it can't, I'd sure like to know before posting.

    I'd appreciate any advice.

    Thanks,

    Michael

PS. if it can be used as diesel fuel, are the classifieds on this site the right place to advertise? Are their other places that are more appropriate?

The classifieds section on this site is for trading between individuals. It is not free advertising for companies. Thank you for asking.

    Sure.

Do you have any idea about my question? Or if not, do you know who would know?

you might be able to use it in a burner for a furnace that can burn waste oil, but I would be afraid to use it thru the fine mechanical parts of a pump and injector system without knowing some more specifics on it.

What type of specifics would be helpful for you?

This is very high grade stuff, made to lubricate precision cutting instruments, like the ones used to make surgical screws.

It would be great if I could sell it as straight cutting oil, because 55-gal drums go for between $400 - $1,000 each. But when I spoke with someone in the industry, he said that since the entire focus of that industry is precision, people like to use exactly what they always use, lots of customized formulas, and even if I offered a great deal, people wouldn't want to take any kind of risk. He said if this is used to make a screw that's going to go inside your mother's knee, you want absolute certainty—and I can see his point.

So it seems selling it as cutting oil is out, but I'd like to know what type of information I'd need to know if it could be used as diesel fuel.

I wouldn't run it as a fuel, I'd just try to sell it to a small independant shop that could use it or burn it in a used oil furnace.

It isn't worth saving a few bucks if you destory a $20,000 engine.

    Mike,
Did some poking around for you. 2 main types of cutting oil, petroleum and synthetic with dark and light of each.

Comparrison: Diesel #2 mfg. by Phillips petroleum is 7.08 to 7.33 lbs per gallon or S.G. of .81 to .88

Petroleum cutting oil: 7.56 lbs per gallon or .906 S.G. The caution here is the cutting oil is specifically designed to do a certain thing like drill stainless and has properties that may not agree with diesel injection like corrosiveness that would destroy "o" rings and rubber components. You could end up buying some engines.

Recomend you find out what you have and sell it to the target audience

There should be a CAS# on the MSDS or the drum. Run that on the web and it will tell you more.

    That help?
