I'd like to put either 6" or 7" straights on my 88 FLD. It has the 400 Cummins Big Cam with 5" stock exhaust on both sides of the cab, 84" up from the cab corners. Noise isn't a major issue because i pull belly dump in the summer only and usually i only go a few miles from the plant to the job and its a lot of stopping and accelerating. I have to replace the old spools anyway because they rotted out years ago, but i figured i could get more power out of straight pipes. My question is, and im not a mechanic im a machinist so bear with me, what size would be best leaving the tips at 84", and where would i want to make the jump to the larger diameter in the exhaust system?

The only difference you will notice is your head will roar for two days after driving your truck for one day. Then you will get tennitis and have loud whistling ears like I do because I drove a 318 Detroit with gutted mufflers and a loud NH 250 Cummins.

Those older trucks are loud enough anyway. Don't do permanent damage just because you like the sound. The truck with the loud Detroit I bought that way, but it sounded so good I didn't change it. It was impossible to drive with both windowns down. There was such a drone that way if would affect my vision.

Ok... as far as the spools go then, would you recommend anything in particular? The truck isn't loud at all. Oh and i've dynamatted the walls and floor of the cab.

My only recommendation is get as quite of a muffler with as good of a flow you can find. The last I bought I told the parts guy what I wanted. Turned out I got a straight through design which droned at certain rpms and the jake brakes would blast you out. Straight pipes will defeat the purpose of the dynamat you put in. I wish they had that stuff back in my day. A factory truck would drive you crazy with noise.

The truck in my avitar was all factory. NH 250 Cummins, weed burner with a turndown on the muffler. I added a foam blanket and carpet to the doghouse and insulation in the sleeper walls. Still when I got home from a trip my ears and head would roar for two days or more.

As I write this I have a screaming high pitched whistling in my ears drumming through my head. I have to sleep with a tv on to drown out the noise. If I'm really tired or sick the noise is so loud it's hard to hear anything else. Some days it's better, some much worse. Don't do this to yourself like I did.

Check the internet and try to find flow rates and db levels for different mufflers. I would give up some flow for quiet.

I'll see what i can find. Another thing, unrelated, i always thought the governor was supposed to give the signal to the compressor to stop. Recently i saw an air dryer with a cross-over from the inlet to outlet air lines. I asked what it was for and they told me that it was to let the compressor know to stop. Does anyone know how you can tell what set-up you're supposed to have? I have been having that problem with my compressor running constantly and i have no air leaks.

I love my straight's. No muffler included. As a matter of fact, I drive with the windows down much as possible, in winter, keep the heater high, summer, keep ther A/C on. But windows stay down 80% of the time. ..........."Did you say something, speak up" :biggrin_2556:

I put straights on and top of stack to ground is 13'5, just go high as u can to keep noise away and youl b fine, also between my clamp and cab is a rubber mount so no vibration or drone stuff
