A hidden shunt coil in the base of an antenna would drive the average person crazy trying to figure out the source of the dc short and why that dc short is perfectly fine. Nothing common sense about it.

I believe my Wilson 1000 has such configuration which will fool a person trying a normal continuity test. The test will show a DC short, but that's because the antenna has a shunt-fed radiator that the meter cannot know about and thus shows it as DC shorted. But, at the design frequencies of the antenna, it effectively transmits the AC / RF energy being produced by the transmitter. If the antenna is tuned to a good SWR value for the frequency and is communicating effectively, then it is likely OK even if it tests as DC shorted.

I've read that such antennas are constructed that way because it helps hold down noise.

There seems to be different models of Sirio 5000 antennas. Which model did you have?

Yes, but for the 11 meter band, I don't think it makes much difference in impedance matching, since the antenna is already grounded to the vehicles body. Now I can see it being more useful for the 40 & 80 meter band.

Naptown said pl239, I assumed he meant pl259 in response to your post about checking for shorts. I don't know which sir 5000 antenna he has. After doing some research, it looks to me like they are 3/8 adapted to mount. If there are some that use an so239 adapter then maybe he meant he was checking at the base of the antenna? If he was able to disassemble the antenna, did it have a shunt below the main coil? If it did, I really don't see the advantage of the antenna having a shunt since a lot of cb antennas tune fine without one.

I haven't heard that about holding down noise. They are inductive to help with impedance matching. But it probably isn't needed if the antenna is mounted and grounded properly. They are limited to the frequency in use too.

I want to throw in a impedance match just so I can have a DC grouned antenna. I can get away with it currently because my 102 and spring is resonant down on 26mhz. Probably have other issues to work out. :p

I usually use a lug style mount and when I run through rain I can hear the static arcing from the antenna. Where would it be arcing if I wasn't running a lug mount? Inside the radio somewhere?

Useful on any band, hence being hidden in the base of this antenna behind those 4 screws.

Ok, is that antenna designed for a magnet mount then? Or is it for some special mount that Sirio sells.

Standard SO239 roof mount or magnet mount.
