When you arrive, you log on duty loading/unloading for like 15 minutes while you check in with security and park. Usually someone will load or unload you while you sit in the truck, so you log sleeper. You'll have like 2+ hours in the sleeper when you are done, so you just need 6 more hours (or less) until you can move. Find a spot to park. If they insist on kicking you out, call your manager for instructions.

It doesn't stop your 14 hour clock. That's the problem. You can learn split sleeper rules of logging to use to help the above issues.

If you're going to be there 1.5 hours, stay until the 2 hour mark is up. Same with if you're there 5-6 hours, stay off duty or sleeper until 8 hrs has passed.

It's a pretty well known trick if you can sleep at or near your delivery location the night before. That way, you can sneak over while still on line 1 or 2. They can take however long they want to unload, then you can start with a fresh 14.

At least, that's what a friend told me to do, who's brother is a trucker, who heard it at the lunch counter.

That's what I did when this happened to me. Since my ending and starting was in the same town, saw no need to add any explanation. The man doesn't know I didn't spend the night there. ;)

But if you were as in the example stuck there for 7 hours you would only need one more hour to make your 8 split, that 8 not counting against your 14 hr clock, only the shorter 2 hr break counts against the 14 hr clock as I understand it?

And since my air brakes have failed and my dispatcher is sending a tow truck which will be here in an hour and a half, and I will be driving out in an hour anyways.............

It's true... I was sitting at that very counter the day after that conversation took place. I was.

I'm pretty sure this is a myth. I've heard tales of this phenomenon ever since elogs came into common usage, but I've never met anyone who's company would actually pay several hundred dollars to get towed a couple miles down the road to a safe haven. Seems unlikely.

Wal-Mart DCs are really the only place that are completely inflexible on this issue. The few times that I've run out of time at a Wal-Mart, I've just called my company and told them I'm out I've time, customer is kicking me out, and Im gonna drive to the closest safe haven. Never had an issue doing this. Most every other place I've run out of time at has been willing to make accomadations to finish a split or a full break as long as I ask nicely.

There's a recent thread on split sleeper, I'm sure if you search it will come up. It was VERY well written, 25 pages and counting.

I'm probably wrong, I think if you took a 2, it pauses your 11 drive clock, not your 14. Take an 8, it pauses both 11 and 14.

But it gets confusing fast. Something to do with it starts a different clock at the START of the 8 or the 2. I forget.

Dagnabbit again. I saved the thread to read it later, now I don't know how to link it here. And if I'd read it "later" Ida been more help.
