I signed up for stevens transport last month and graduated from their school a couple of weeks ago in Colorado(a great school no complaints). When I had talked to the recruiter and got hired originally I told them I was a cancer survivor they didn't seem to have a problem with that. I was happy because I had spent the last three months trying to find a job with no luck. I got down to stevens in dallas on a Saturday and did some backing/road test on sunday passed everything. Then on Monday they informed us that they did their own DOT med cards so I had to do all of the physical over again. The doctor said because of the chemo I could have heart damage even though everything sounded fine and it had been 3 years. He put me on a med hold until he got my records from the oncologist. I went through all of orientation and even got hired on. Finally on Thursday the doc called me in and informed me that they required an ecg with pt and another clearance from my oncologist (which will probably require another ct scan oh and by the way my insurance hasn't kicked in yet). So they sent me back home on a med hold and told me to call them when I got the results. Here are the problems I finally got of my oncologist's nurse and my doc is out of town she won't be back until the 20th and the soonest I can get in just for the appointment is the 25th. I called my school to see if they could mail my hard copy cdl straight to me so I could just get a different job with my existing med card but they said they had to go through stevens per the contract. I am three months behind on rent, I have no money left, I can't get a hold of my counselor at stevens, there are no jobs here, I sold my car to pay for part of school, and it could be another month before I get these test done. What can I do?

The state issues your CDL, not the company. if their giving you grief, just go to the DMV and get a new one. They won't hold it on you.

You have rights. Put a call into your local ACLU office. They will help you. Just make sure you tell the ACLU that you are wanting to work. If that doesn't work call the Attorney General's office in your state and Texas. Make some noise but do it in a controlled manner. The one thing a trucker knows is that the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

I agree. Go to DMV and get new license. Don't tell them the deal. Just say you lost it. It has nothing to do with Stevens now

You should have your original med card; the one you got before Stevens gave you another physical. Paschall Truck Lines will accept that original medical card. Take that medical card to the DMV and get your CDL that Stevens if refusing to turn over to you. If you live in the Eastern half of the USA then Paschall will hire you. Someone else posted they had a similar problem with CR England refusing to give them their hard copy. It seems CR England was refusing to give the person the hard copy unless they paid in full the CDL school. Just show the medical card at the DMV and tell them you haven't received the hard copy in the mail yet. You should be in the system that you have a CDL.

I'm not understanding how DMV gave your CDL to a school instead of you, you took the test and passed, right ? So, you should have the license in hand.

well if you passed your road test to get your cdl, then you should be in the system at the bmv, just go there and act like you lost your cdl license, show them the medical card, and they should give you a new hard copy. good luck, remember when you go thru these types of dilemma theres always a light at the end of the tunnel.

What address did you use for the card to be mailed too. I too would say that the card was lost in the mail, you may have to pay the price to have it reissued is all.

Eventually Stevens may make you pay for the schooling, but...... I would worry about that in the future, esp if you can get on with another place.

A lot of other companies also do their own dot physical also.

Do it quick on the changeover, before Stevens can report it.

I agree, this is close to a discrimination issue than anything else I have read in a while. Is there justification for the additional testing and is this something that the DOT has said to do in order to ensure someone is able to drive?
