Hi, I am currently a student driver in dallas,tx.
I just completed the classroom portion of training.
I have passed all written tests, including dbl/trpls and tankers.
I have 2 weeks left as of Monday Jan.17th,2011 on the driving range.
My question for now is... is it possible to get a dedicated account route
right out of school? if not how could i go about finding a good job and be home weekends or atleast be home 2 days a week?
Any suggestion of a good company to go with?,
with a terminal in the Dallas/Ft worth area.

welcome to the forum, try dump truck, garbage, or oil wells, most or all otr jobs are out 4 to 6 weeks with a trainer, than your out the same length of time in your own truck.

Everytime you seea truck in your area that looks like its local (day cab or straight truck) wright the name down and look up the company on the net, then go find out who the hiring person is and talk to them about the possibilities of a job.
Thats how I got my first trucking job at a redi mix plant. I had a verbal before I even went to school. And I was 57 at the time. Never have, never will, run OTR. -
thanks for the responses..
I'm currently also considering a city job as a Water Distribution maintenance tech.,
which will require driving a tanker. any advise as far as driving a tanker?
I heard one thing to remember is stop and start SMOOTHLY because of surge.
Any advise on getting a dedicated route with no exp?
They claim your home weekends? is that actually true? -
you "chose" 3 or 4 OTR companies in YOUR OTHER THREAD.......got OTR and get your experience first, THEN you "might" be able to get a dedicated run.....and by the way...
"weekends" is (in trucking) ANY 2 CONSECUTIVE DAYS OFF...mon/tues...thurs/fri.....get it...??? -
you are putting the horse before the cart.
you need experience first, just my opinion.
If you are in Dallas, its probably Stevens.
Stick it out for a year, try not to crash the truck, get your school paid for.
Then think about local. Local is harder than OTR, in my opinion.
Tight docks, blind sides, impatient housewifes on the cell phone = accidents.
Fenderbenders, dents dings, a few and your unemployable. -
There are some companies that have dedicated for brand new drivers. I know swift has the dollar tree account, and Werner has dollar general. Those are both open to new drivers. But look at the reason, nobody wants them, your really don't get home all that much more, and the miles are low, spend alot of time and shipper/reciever, as they are both driver unloads.
Best advice I can give you. Take it slow, there is no rush on commiting to a company. If you want to be home alot, don't look at the big trucking companies, go local. -
Work your way through companies listed by state at fleetdirectory.com, and check local listings in the 'Transport' column of Craigslist... just be careful about slinging your personal info on C/L. Some of those companies listed at fleetdirectory.com offer training and also have local or regional work available. Good luck to ya...
Dyancej and truck.ninja Thank this. -
Keep in mind too. Those little stores is a good place for a newbie to ding some cars and then ding his DAC.
