Hi All, I am taking my CDL training at Napier's Truck Driving Academy here in Ohio. I am into my second week and just took my exam for the CDL temporaries on Saturday. I passed all six tests (General Knowledge, Combination, Air Brakes, Tankers, Doubles/Triples and Haz-Mat). I am 54 years old and was recently unemployed after sixteen years in an office environment. My MVR and background report has absolutely nothing on it at all. I am scheduled to graduate the academy on October 1st. This past Thursday I filled out an online application for Schneider. While I was in class Friday I had a message on my cell phone from a lady there at Schneider. She said she received my app and wanted to talk to me. I haven't returned the call yet but I plan to do so Tuesday. My question is....should I be sending in apps this early or wait until I actually complete my training have have my CDL's? Thanks for your help.

Can't hurt anything that's for sure. Some companies will "pre-hire" contingent upon getting your CDL and others require you actually have CDL in hand before you can fill out an application. Just because you get a pre-hire does not mean you are employed until you make it through that companies orientation and training period. Do your research to make sure you find the right fit (company) for you. It varies from person to person. Good luck.

From what I have read on these boards, you should begin that process even before starting school. On a side note, I am 50 and have been in the same office for 15 years. I have always dreamed of driving the big rigs.....you're living my dream, treat it well. Lol. Keep me posted with your progress.

Since it will take some companies weeks to process your application and there will be a time limit for you to be placed after graduation, I would start now. This will allow you more options upon graduation.

U can always apply and hear what they have for you in that area u live in, pay, hometime etc. Then just tell them you'll think it over and let them know at a later date. My school gave us a pack of apps to send in. Said fill them all out and send them in. That u can always see what they're about before committing. Also could be a ploy for the school to get u to companies they prefer. I filled one out got rejected thank god and applied at my current company I drive for now. After reading on here about the rejected company I was glad I didn't go with them.

In New Jersey I was told I can't get my hazmat until I pass the driving test at the DMV. Yet I can get my twic card, go figure!!! Thanks for the suggestion of filling out applications early.

keep sending them out, get a few prehire's and then pick the one that sounds the best for you.
BTW Schneider would be near the top of the list.

Early, always early. It shows motivation on your part. Employers like that, your being proactive.
