Welcome New Drivers. Here is a process that I've been following for the last 1-1/2 months. To many new drivers are just taking the first offer for employment and then regretting the decision. ( You will get MANY Offers) Below is just an outline that I've followed and has served me well. Hope this helps!

Make this questionnaire on a word doc and print a copy for each company.. I have about 60 questions that I ask every recruiter. (I Will post below) I interview them instead of being interviewed. I have a process for researching companies that takes a few days per company.

    • I go through the companies entire site, every page.
    • I then search you tube for vloggers and anything related to that company and watch them.
    • I then search FB for drivers of that company and reach out to them. I'll send them something like:

Hi Fred I'm looking into joining ABC Trucking. I'm reaching out to current drivers to get their opinions (Good/Bad) I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts if you have the time.

    • Then I come here and 1 other forum and research posts related to said company.
    • Then I'll fill out the full Application, call the recruiter and ask them if they have about 30 minutes because i am currently researching companies trying to decide which one I'd like to work with for the long haul.
I haven't had one act negatively yet. I have a little thing that I tell them that lets them know what i'm doing. Sometimes at first they will ask you some questions to pre-qualify you (which is fine) and some will start telling you info. then I usually tell them. "So I have about 60 questions I'd like to ask you. Do you have about 20 minutes right now? OK Great! So we both know that the turn over rate in this industry is at an all time high of 80-100% What I'm doing is trying to find a company that is a good fit for me and I'm a good fit for them. I want to avoid all the job hopping that is happening. I'd like to find a company and stay with that company long term." At this point they are usually good to go and very receptive

I definitely recommend starting a spreadsheet with the companies name listed on the left and all the info important to you on the top and just fill in the info as you go. The info for each company will start to run together after several calls.

Feel free to add me here if you like. Questions are posted below!

There are a bunch of questions that new drivers do not need to ask.

At what point could I be a trainer?

How much more do trainers make?
    - these two are irreverent and rather reaching. Training should be a long term goal earned with skills acquired, not just time.

What is the driver turnover rate? - really they don't need to know that. it is a skewed figure and you think a recruiter is going to tell the truth to bash his company?

Is there forced dispatch? - of course there is, this isn't a contractor's position that they are applying for.

Is there forced dispatch to NYC? - same as above, you go where the freight takes you.

Do the trucks have drive cams/Dash cams? Outward facing or inward or both? - another irrelevant question because it is part of their safety program and really doesn't matter.

What are the trucks governed at? Pedal/Cruise? - again if they govern the trucks, we are not talking about people with five years experience who want to push the truck to the limit, we are talking a newbie who may not be able to handle the truck even at posted speeds.

Do you have a clear career path for someone looking to grow? I.E. Company driver to Owner/Operator - Why even ask? It is nothing to do with learning how to drive or how to be a good driver.

How long would I have to wait to become an O/O? - that's kind of self-explained, you can become (unfortunately) an O/O the day you get your cdl.

Do you offer lease, lease to purchase? - again to ask this right out of the gate seems to be setting the driver for failure.

Is the finance done through you or a 3rd party? - Irrelevant.

I've been hiring for the past 11 years and most of the other questions you have are alright, there are more questions to be asked if there is a need for it like these.

Do you have an employee policy manual that I can look at?

AND will I get a printed copy if I am hired?

Will you explain to me how the company is structured?

Will I be explained who I can contact if I have problems with say for example Payroll?

Is there anyone assigned to me that helps me through beginner problems?

If I need additional help on my driving skills, not saying I would but if I do, who would I talk to?

What do I have to bring along while I am on the road?

What can't I bring along while I'm on the road?

Does my class room instructions include printed material?

Do you have a simulator for me to practice on before I get into a truck?

This is for those who are company trained - Can I have a copy of the finance agreement for my CDL education so I can have a lawyer look at it? - NOTE that if they say no, then don't consider them a company you want to work for.

AND to go along with that above question - If I leave the company no matter what, do I have to pay my CDL training back to the company?

Two follow up questions for that one if the answer is yes -
IF I leave on my own, is there a payment schedule for repaying the money back?

IF I am terminated, is there a payment schedule for repaying the money back?

AND another one related to the "loan" - what is the interest rate that I am charged for the CDL training?

Your set of questions are 100 times better than the 90% of wannabees' typical "I've heard some bad things about Don't Give A Cr*p Trucking, but you've got to start somewhere. When they stick a live cattle prod in my boootay will they use D-cells or C-cells? Thanks?

So I gotta' ask......If you ask 60 questions, and you only like the answers to 55, will you still hire on there ? Or do you need to like all 60 answers ? Also, you must get some pretty bored recruiters who have the time to answer 60 questions ! Luck to ya' !

I was just getting ready to make a somewhat similar post.
New drivers, or wannabees, hear on a daily basis that recruiters are the scum of the earth. Let's say you ask a number of these questions, but most being related to the compensation package. Or, let's say your private driving school brings in recruiters (which will be my situation). How much of what the recruiter tells you, can you ask to be committed to writing (after all, 99% of the recruiters are bas tards, right?). Are you likely to get a "rep" for being a trouble maker before even graduating?

Oh brother, some more fresh meat that think they have a handle on trucking at a mega training company!

Hey, why not go the full 9 yards and set-up a spreadsheet and fill in your questionnaire for all the known major companies. Rank and weigh each answer; draw some conclusions we all could gawk at. I know at least one regular contributor here will appreciate that.

Listen someone has already tried to start a web sight with all the information you are seeking with your questionnaire. Only thing that web sight is worthless; filled with window licking ### kissers that have no clue how trucking or these trucking companies work.

So you and other fresh meat can knock yourself out wasting time researching the non-important details of all the training companies before you quit or get fired after only 8 months working for your 'ideal' company.

If any new drivers have tried this method successfully, please share your experience.

So after 1.5 months, have you been hired?
Have you received a job offer?

Your too long list is definitely not an approach that I would ever take.

Like others have mentioned, a good recruiter would not take the time to answer this tedious list of questions. He or she just wouldn’t have the time. They have a job to do, fill seats in trucks that need drivers. Seems to me that you are asking questions, that you could use as a legal basis, if things don’t work out.

Or if you are a company, maybe you have positive answers to all of your questions. So you could show prospective employees how good ABRO Transport is.

I would be really careful with a recruiter who did answer your questionnaire, they could give you perfect answers, and 2 weeks later on the Greyhound taking you back home, without a job in hand you’d say “geez I wonder how that happened?”.

Pick a few reputable companies, and concentrate your efforts in their direction, not using a scatter shot to the world.

Use your time wisely, your survey makes it appear that you don’t value yours or others time. This is the real world.

Since you’re offering free advice, are you an employer? ABRO Transport, sounds like a company name.

Here are my questions for this poster:

Do you have open “company” driving positions?
How many company owned units do you have on the road, as of today?
    Or
Are you a lease purchase operation?

    Is this you:
    ABRO
    501 Gray Ave
    Greenville, OH 45331
    USDOT Number 2374321
    (Shows 1 truck)
    From google search

I have no idea of what your background is ABRO Transport? So please qualify.
    Do you have a CDL?
    Do you have driving experience?
    If yes, how long?
Are you currently employed as a Class A driver?
    Are you a company driver?
How long with your present company?
    LP?
    OO?

    Dan.S Thanks this.

I wouldn't say they do not need to ask these particular questions. Maybe not all and maybe some more that you posted but these particular items are what is important to me. These questions or any others that may be posted are an outline.

Training is a long term goal. It's good to know what the companies policy, timeline etc. are in order to help make a decision for long term employment.

I have been told by recruiters that their turnover rate is anywhere from 85-100% I have yet to come across 1 recruiter that has said otherwise.

Not all companies force dispatch to NYC. Others that I have talked to say yes there is. They usually give me a % or say something like 2-3 times per month.

Drive cams are very relevant. Most will not be comfortable with an inward facing cam and could possible be a deal breaker for a new hire.

You lost me on this one ---> Do you have a clear career path for someone looking to grow? I.E. Company driver to Owner/Operator - Why even ask? It is nothing to do with learning how to drive or how to be a good driver.
As someone looking to stay with and grow with a company I know I'd like to know if they offer a clear path to do so. If that is my long term goal then why would I not ask? This question or thread has nothing to do with learning how to drive.
Most companies are offering some type of O/O program at some point in your career if you choose that route.

Financing is relevant. Why would I choose a company with a horrible Lease/Purchase program or if someone had a bankruptcy maybe they couldn't get a 3rd party loan and they would need company financing.
