So...I bought a 2008 VN880 with a D16.
The injectors are bad according to the dealer and causing issues. some other stuff is going to push the repair bill on a 941,000 mile engine past 10 grand.
That being said, I would prefer to have a caterpillar anyhow, preferably a pre 2000 one. I know you used to be able to spec the 880 with a C-15 so I'm not sure if a 3406E would be too big of an issue.
The trick is finding someone who can do it or has done it before, and finding an engine, and for that amount of money I want it warrantied (I'm thinking a cat rebuilt motor)
Any help or pointers is helpful!

You have no idea how much stuff would have to be changed. And if you plan on getting it all done would be more then the trucks worth. Huge undertaking.
Either rebuild the d16 or find a truck with a cat in it.
Oh and it's not that the cat wont fit, as it most certainly will. Its everything your going to need to make it all work. -
It'd be a big pain. Most all these newer trucks are multiplexed now on J1939 protocol, so there's the issue of getting all your gauges and such to work too with an older engine (which depending on the year used the older J1587 protocol). I can see many hours of frustration trying to get all the components to talk to each other.
Oxbow, Feedman, Justrucking2 and 2 others Thank this. -
@Oldironfan can put a S60 in it. It's super easy according to him.
Oldironfan Thanks this. -
You may be able to put a Cummins in it though, like the CM-870. Volvo was using those in their 07 780s and maybe a harness is available. Like others said though, it is the electronics. A Cummins may work.
-
They make them in Cummins so that’ll be easier for you to do. you’re gong to pay the pretty Cummins price for the harness plus motor it’s self and labor mid 20s if you’re lucky.
Or just fix it and spend the 10 15 get it done rightJoeziah and Justrucking2 Thank this. -
A shop that knows what they are doing cab swap any old engine into a newer truck.
Joeziah Thanks this. -
As long as you realise what you want to do is illegal.
-
Why is it illegal to swap an engine?
And 2. Its also illegal to leave piss bottles on the side of the road and truck stops
It’s also illegal to park on the shoulder for a 30 minute break
It’s also illegal to cut your floor out and poop as your co driver drives.
Should I keep going? -
I think he's getting at the fact you aren't supposed to put an older emissions year engine into a truck that wasn't built as a glider.
