I drive a tractor trailer twice a week and usually within 150 miles of my yard.
When I'm not driving the TT, I drive a straight truck- usually within 100 miles of my yard.
I've been keeping a book in my truck with two weeks logged but do I need to?
I'm guessing yes.
Stupid question: do I need to run logs?

Beyond the 100 air-mile radius, you do...UNLESS you are an intrastate hauler and your state allows a wider radius without logging. Even if required to log, you only need the current day and the 7 previous...and if you typically claim local work under the 100 air-mile radius exception and go beyond on any particular day, you're only required to have that day's log with you. Worst case scenario, current day + 7 previous is all you'd ever need here in the states for 8 days total.

This is something people tend to over complicate. If you are not an owner operator just ask your employer and do as they direct. Don't make your job harder then you need to.

Logs are my responsibility, not his.Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
Read my post again, I was not speaking about responsibility. I was trying to say ask the employer or for that matter another driver. Just don't over complicate your job, it's hard enough.

If your going over the radius limit than yes. No need for paper, download BigRoad to your phone and use that. MUCH easier.

The other CDL driver has to avoid weigh stations because he has some "issues" so there's no asking him.
And the non commercial driver's are just that. They're just happy to be driving "cool" trucks. They have no idea what could happen to them if they get in an accident and a highway patrol answers the call.
I asked one of them what happens if there's an air leak and the alarm goes off. He said, I guess I'll lose my brakes. -
Sounds to me that you have more severe problems then when or what to log. If your working for someone that is running outlaw best advice I'd to get out.

I was four hours too late to a nice local straight truck job hauling chemicals- paid great. Guy who got there before me got the job.
I have a bite from a container roll off company but the hourly is not so great unless they can promise me ten hours OT/ week.
I'm still trying to get my year experience
In so I can drive for a beverage company or food company.
Right now, I'm just doing what I have to to get the bills paid.Lonesome Thanks this. -
You don't need a year experience to do beverage or food. Depending on your location, they'll take you if you have a pulse.
