My husband has always said that he would not mind driving the "big trucks" for a living but just could not see leaving us girls for what seems like long periods of time. Due to a series of unfortunate events over the course of three years he finally had to trust me to handle the home front and take a job as a driver. The desision was certainly not made lightly but it had to be made as several factories in and around our small town have laid off or just outright shut down. Even with a degree he could not find a job within a sixty mile radius except through temp services. Our income has been cut by 30k a year. Yes a huge adjustment.
He got the e-mail from Prime saying they were interested in training him and hiring him. He was so excited and honestly so was I because you will always have your CDL and there are always driver jobs. On 4/11 he called the recruiter and she got him his bus ticket to leave for Springfield on 4/15. He went to the DMV on Friday here in TN to test for his permit since it is a bit cheaper than in MO. Turns out you need a DOT physical first. No worries he will just get the physial and permit in MO.
The first day of orientation was fine and just what he expected it to be. He did not even mind having to share a room with a total stranger at their hotel. The only mishap was they told him his CPAP machine was the wrong kind. He had to get one that gave a read-out of when he was actually using it but not to worry they could get him one for $2500 at the rate of $50 to $75 a week. Sounded a little bit fishy to me and just another way for the company to get paid but if the allmighty government regulated DOT says it is so then so be it.
On the second day of orientation he called me a little after dinner to tell me they were sending him home because of a prescription our family doctor had wrote for him but we could not afford so he just didn't take it. Since he had not been taking it we did not even think it would be a factor. He doesnt even need it but the doctor said he could use it to supplement his anxiety prescription he does take everyday to take the edge off some of the side effects. Thats all it was. They knew about it because when our doctor faxed his info it was on the paper that was faxed.
Now they are putting him on a bus home (the cost of the ticket he has to pay back, I have $48 in my checking account or I would go get him). They said he will need to go see our family doctor after 30 days of not taking the prescription (which he never took to begin with) and get him to write a note to say he is fine without it. Then he can go back.
I know it is our fault for not being familiar with every minute detail of the DOT rules, regulations and policies but honestly sometimes a person just doesnt know which questions to ask. Its just very frustrating to finally be excited about something after three years of struggling to make ends meet and this to happen to us. Anyhow in a month perhaps we can get it right by DOT standards.
Hope this helps anyone who hasnt thought of these few things.
Such a dissapointment.......

Sorry to hear that. A lot of people jack them CPAP prices up. I paid $2500 for mine and found the same one online for $700. Just google CPAP and you'll find it.
Ask questions on this forum before picking a company. We could of probably saved you the trouble.
I'll move this to the Prime forum.

Sorry to hear what happened to your SO. That's not an unusual result with the meds that are illegal to drive on. The doctor only has the applicant's word that he hasn't taken the meds, and doesn't need them. So he sends the person home to get a letter from his doctor, 30 days off of it to make sure he doesn't really need it, and then you come back.
As far as the sleep apnea deal is concerned, Prime contracted with a local sleep clinic to do the tests in their facility. The clinic gets someplace to do them gratis, and a large volume of folks that need testing. Prime got the services at a cut rate for the drivers, the convenience of just needing to come into the terminal, and doesn't have to send them home to their doctor with the attendent loss of income - the wait list is usually just a day or three. If you take the test and don't need treatment, it only costs you $150 - which is a humongous savings. If you are diagnosed, the $2500 covers the tests, the CPAP unit, follow-up care (not sure how long,) replacement parts, etc. Prime finances that, and only charges the driver $50 per week. Many clinics charge $2000 - $3000 just for the test.
Reading the JBS thread - for example, they force their drivers onto a 90-day card, sends them home to get the test, and they can't come back until its done - no income during that period. Their drivers are on the hook for all the costs rendered at time of service unless they have insurance, less deductables and copays, etc. So new hires are really stuck. -
The information is all here, and has been for quite some time... especially these two issues when dealing with Prime medical requirements...
Very few want to dig into the Prime forumn to reasearch it, and even more want it served up on a plate, on demand... Some people just come out and say it, "im sure its in here somewhere, but I dont want to read all those posts"
A forum search in the Prime section for the word "Apnea" has over 100 posts. Again the word "CPAP" has over 100 posts.
"physical" 100 posts
"medication" 60 posts.
Its all in there... discussion on what kind of machines are required... "yes you can have your own, but it must a some form of memory that can be downloaded to verify usage"
And MULTIPLE stories of individuals being sent home for a medication problem... 30 day deal, doctor clearances and they come back. -
The reality is that many, many people are not as good at looking up information as you and I may be. People with lives and financial pressures at home don't have 10 hour breaks and 34 hour restarts to spend searching trucking forums and honing their query skills. Give this lady and her family a break, it sounds like they need it.
U2, on a personal note I know what you're going through - I lost my grandmother a few years ago myself, and it's not a fun time.Chris's wife Thanks this. -
Im sorry, it wasnt ment to be a criticism of the OP.
Cant fix something thats already broke... its the boat they are in at this point
It was truly aimed at other people looking at coming to Prime.
With an interesting title like "such a dissapointment..." it will stand out. I bet it gets quite a bit of views.
I cant think of any topic that hasnt been covered in here somewhere, and yet we get the same tales of rejection, miscomunication, mis-understanding, percieved deception on Primes part etc... -
I came back home to have my sleep study test done, I only had to pay a $20.00 co-pay!

Google prime Rip-Off over 100 post there too. Must be true it's there. Love how newbie's treat people like they are stupid when something happens. Prime should ask what meds he was pescribed in phone interview. But I stay far away from Prime ,CRST, CRE and the other rip off specialist.

So what, u drive for swift!

Sounds like a minor set back. After 30 days and a new CPAP machine he will be good to go! I hope you can get the funds together to survive the 30 days plus low pay during the training period, etc. FWIW, the cost is still a lot less than getting into any number of other careers. --GOOD LUCK!!
