I am the new guy at one of our dedicated routes. Actually I think I am second newest by about one week, out of four guys. I was told I was filling in for about three months for a guy that hurt his shoulder after slipping on ice.
That was about three months ago. It is a salaried position.
They have been swapping out some older trailers and needed us to pull them to the carrier dealer. I guess we get a trade in on the reefer unit. Then we have to find some replacement trailers at other drop yards in the area.
Of course, they did not want us doing that on days that are heavy with dedicated runs. Loads are light this time of year so we got a friday off. Dispatch asked me to go find a trailer. The shipper was complaining that we did not have enough empties on their lot. Keeping the client happy is number one priority!
So I drove an hour, on my "day off", to get the trailer. Another hour to get it to the shipper. And another back home. I was told that I was on call 7 days a week for this position and I accepted those terms. So three hours was no big deal...
Another day I took an hour to pull two more in from a closer yard. Dispatch also considered it a favor that I did a yard count of trailers at the shipper and receiver. How hard is it to roll along bobtailing and count trailers? Hehehehe
Well today I asked the boss if I was now permanent in this position. I really like it.
He says, "Oh yeah! I'll keep you over all those other guys!"
WOO HOOO!!!!!
Mikeeee
Sucking up does work! (long post, I'm bored)
