Only a maroon would pull a flatbed with no headache rack. They call it a "headache" rack for a reason.

Back when I was in the trade, there was this old high school in Baltimore that was undergoing complete renovations. They wound up with 8” for their incoming water main. In order to get this stuff into the basement, they core drilled a hole through the brick wall and the whole crew slid each stick through the hole. That was brutal.

If things are done properly it’s a non issue. In this instance of shorter pipe ( I’m assuming that because you can’t see any of the failed securement in the photos) a headache rack wouldn’t have don’t much because the pipe would’ve already been moving at whatever the truck speed was by the time it hit the headache rack. This person would’ve been better off building a bulkhead from his dunnage right in front of the pipe he was hauling. But I’m sure that would’ve been too much work because it was only a couple pieces.

Bulkhead on the trailer is what I meant. Hey, I'm old and confused easily,, I've seen flatbeds with no bulkhead and the driver wrapped chains around the front of the load, like a bulkhead.

Whatever that pipe is it put some impressively clean holes in the back wall of that cab. I'm impressed.
