Without getting political (TOO much) did anyone catch the circus in Iowa the last couple of days? The GOP hopefuls all showed up for an event and the #1 question the Iowa governor et al wanted to know is whether the potential candidates would support ongoing farm subsidies (for corn)...
... and we complain about being a "welfare state"... go figure.
Less than 2% of all corn that is grown is eaten by humans as corn. The balance of it goes into ethanol, feed for livestock, and production of HFCS. More corn is produced for HFCS than for just good old plain eating.

New research shows that "Pescovegetarians" have a 43% reduced risk of colorectal cancer. Pescovegetarians were defined in the study as those who ate fish at least once a month and meat less than once a month. Other forms of primarily plant based diet also had reduced cancer risk, but the benefits over a regular meat based diet were not as profound.
Overall, as I continue my journey of education and diet change, the more I read about the topic the more I'm finding the huge importance of having a plant based diet: ie. getting the majority of your calories from unprocessed fruits and vegetables. Fiber seems to be a key component, which is why eating raw plant foods is important. Cooking breaks down the fibers into simpler carbohydrates.
Recently LeBron James made news because of his weight loss (which also put his relationship with McDonald's at risk). This article has photographs of some of the dishes he ate. Primarily a Paleo diet, heavily plant based. Many other professional athletes are following this regimen. -
There's no doubt that eating raw plant based foods is ideal but I have a caveat. I'll eat fruit and raw veges all day long as long as the Monsantos and others of this world aren't allowed to genetically modify anymore fruits, veges. Virtually all of the corn crop, zucchini and papaya crops have been fooled with. You honestly think these idiots are going to stop there. I eat a boatload of fruit and some fresh veges, so I want to eat stuff that is organic or is at least sourced from legit growers.
But corporate pressure is trying to change things. It's a mess.
And we have corrupt politicians who are in bed with these folks. That's why we still don't have labeling stating that this food/ product is GMO or not. We've let just a few powerful companies control the majority of the food supply and it's all about greed and control. Their excuse for not labeling is that it will "confuse" the public.....oh really?? They must be talking about the dumb and dumber program.
We, the people can decide for ourselves what we need to do to have freedom of choice and not capitulate to these bullies. And yes, the farm subsidies have to go. Another stupid Govt decision, that the EU used to do, and all it did was create excesses and mayhem.
Ive been to many countries, especially poorer ones in Europe where the quality of food is far superior to here. Fresh produce in abundance and choices. Their diet is much more flavorful and that's why obesity isn't as bigger problem as it is here.
We also have too many studies, about this, that and the other. Many contradict each other. I don't take much notice of them now. Your education should continue but the smart ones already know what to do.
We have to be careful where we shop and read the labels.
As for the Paleo diet, I'm afraid that on my travels into such places as Paris, and you witness the variety of cheeses out there. And even more astounding is the very lack of obsese people, I'm not going to give up my cheese anytime soon. Eating just plant based food can get a little tedious after a time.
But we really need to get rid of CAFOs too. Go back to being old fashioned againLepton1 Thanks this. -
Educate me, what's a "CAFO"?
-
Heck L/1 don't think you need educating as we are obviously in the same page and are passionate about nutrition but a CAFO is a Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation that are situated all over the U.S. and they are one of the main food sources for the fast food industry. I guess they're looking to get consistent results for their products so say they raise chickens. Those chickens virtually never see the light of day and are confined in a small space with 1000s of other chickens til they're slaughtered for food. Many can barely walk and are fed with hormones to produce bigger breasts for instance.
On top of that, the manure they produce is toxic slurry, in vast quantities so in turn they are potentially polluting the water supply in that area.
The air in the area is thick with the smell of the pollutants. It's disgusting and many of the people who live nearby have moved out. I've gone past a big one in Liberal KS for cattle raising and there's not a blade of grass anywhere. The stench is nasty..
this is what goes on behind the scenes so this is more evidence for you to choose a plant based diet
Its a shame we have stooped to this level, but this is the reality. That's why the wife and I have invested in a small company that rears a small herd of grass fed cattle for instance so the meat is top quality and the animals are treated humanely.
As you say, the education is ongoing and it's amazing what we discover.
Good luck.Lepton1 Thanks this. -
Thanks for your explanation of CAFO, I wasn't familiar with the acronym. I agree that it is depressingly inhumane and unhealthy to raise livestock that way.
You might be interested ion the work of Allan Savory regarding grazing and its potential positive impact on reversing desertification. You can also do a search on YouTube for "Intensive Grazing", there's quite a number of small farmers and ranchers adopting this method. Basically it mimics the natural balance of herbivores and predators by putting large numbers of herbivores in a given area and moving them from place to place, to graze the land down so new growth can occur. It keeps the soil ecosystem healthy.
Allan Savory is one of the most courageous scientists I know. He completely reversed his position after a 40 year career.Dr_Fandango44 Thanks this. -
Thanks for the link and it's a fascinating topic not without it's critics. Unfortunately many are politically motivated and true solutions can get lost in these battles. I guess it's the vegan folks who are not in favor of such actions, plus you can't discount the corruption going on and lobbying conducted by selfish and greedy people. I'm just as concerned about the destruction of the rain forests.
But there is hope and it's folks like Alan Savory and Tasso Azevedo that stick to the task and we hope that Govts throughout the world will listen and provide the funds for solutions.
In the meantime, I've been taking your lead and eating more yogurt, the plain stuff.
However do you find it kinda boring to eat..? LOL
I'm all in favor of stuff without sugar but IMHO it needs livening up a bit.
Do you mix anything in with it? Nuts, fresh fruit, perhaps. Even organic granola?
I was thinking of using it as a base for a salad as in a dressing, maybe with cucumber.
Let me know of your ideas.
I was even thinking about making my own but if I can buy it pure, with no additives, then that should suffice.
Good luck. -
I've found that Chobani brand plain yoghurt has a nice full taste, and acquired a taste for it just plain. My "go to" breakfast is fresh organic blueberries in yoghurt, maybe with a banana. If you need to ween yourself from the sugared up yoghurts then stir in a spoonful of raw honey. At times I'll add 100% cacao with raw honey to whip up a pudding. The cacao has powerful antioxidants and acts like a probiotic boost. If I can find them I'll get cacao nibs, but have only found them in very few places.

I just took my medical exam for a new job. Resting heart rate of 60 bpm and blood pressure 98/68. The doctor thought it was rather remarkable, given that I'm 59 and a smoker. When I kick the smoking and start exercising on flatbed work it should "kick it up a notch" (a la Emeril).

Documents Reveal Sugar Industry Influenced National Health Policy ...
... to our detriment. Knowingly subverting research to avoid public policy changes to reduce or eliminate consumption of sugar. Sounds like Big Tobacco.
