If I had nothing in my background, little desire to get back to where I was living, I'd probably pick Jim Palmer Trucking. Training is in Missoula, MT and almost individual training. The only downside, IMO, is post CDL-training is/can be longer than other companies. But It's good training, and I REALLY want to eventually live somewhere out that way. I would prefer to not pull reefer freight, but that wouldn't override the other things above. Reefer freight means customers that often take long times to load/unload and customers have more complaints/reject freight than with other types of trucking. IMO it would be more ideal to start with a dry van company since the freight requires little attention from drivers. You will be busy enough learning to drive and navigate.
JPT training is nearly identical to Prime, but on a more personal level instead of on a mass-scale like Prime. JPT hauls only Prime freight to Prime customers. Ask about cost/coverage of their health insurance. It was very expensive and not comprehensive a few years ago when I last checked.
You earn 1 day off for each week out. You designate an area a few weeks in advance to take home time. You just need to find a safe/legal place to park the tractor. Usually any hotel that has truck parking is OK with them.
Roehl, Millis, Prime, JPT are pretty good places to start. But, JPT & Prime are picky about applicants. You don't have to be perfect, but it doesn't take much for them to not pick you. Lot's of trucking companies hire applicants these companies reject.
Please don't show up with no money and expect any trucking company to take care of you. You need cash/credit card so you aren't begging the company to allow you to advance you money to eat. JPT & Prime will advance you some money. I don't recall if it's $200 or $500 per week. That comes out of your future pay, so if you take it your first few paychecks will be smaller.BlueThunderr Thanks this. -
