    Or stick with XP if you're still using that, works just fine w/XP... either way it's a good idea... Vista blows anyway, CoPilot isn't the only software that has issues with Vista.

    Yes, many developers are running away screaming from making applications that have to comply with Vista's quirks. XP and 7 are both fine operating systems and ALK / CoPilot made sure that their new program works fine on those. BUT, I still sympathize with those who have Vista, so I'm not trying to downplay that they are out there. (Currently that would be 24% of all users to our site last month, so that is still a bunch of folks on Vista.)

    But, you have to pull over to read the atlas. The computer talks at you, while eyes on the road.

    Soooooooo, its best to have both?

    Digitron can't get their software to work with Vista either... & they've sent us a couple different beta versions to test out... we have to use my laptop with XP to pull data downloads from an SCCA Formula 500 Car rather than the car owner's Vista machine.

    Interesting about the number of XP/Vista/7 users out there... I just checked my stats for last month over at http://f500.us/ (a forum dedicated to the SCCA Formula 500 class) and amongst Windows users....

    XP = 54%
    Vista = 17%
    Win7 = 19% (estimate)

    Still a TON of XP users out there it seems.... what's really going to suck is that many of them will eventually upgrade to Vista without realizing it's issues.

    I'll probably upgrade to 7 eventually... but I'll stick with XP for another year or so... if it ain't broke, don't fix it. :lol:

    Until you're in a city surrounded by tall buildings, in a canyon, in severe weather, etc... then that thing goes quiet as a mute after you get the "signal lost" warning, & your "you are here" icon turns into a big, fat, blinking question mark.... then what? :lol:

    Electronics will never be a substitute for having a map & knowing how to read it... ever. (God, I love the X-Box generation :lol: ) The ability to press a button will never trump the ability to think.

    Of course, but if I could only have one, the electronics are not 100% reliable... the paper maps win.

    If you ever have to go into a large city (like NYC), make sure you have picked up a city map on your way in & have it prefolded to be able to follow your route... even if you DO have a GPS... trust me on that one.

    If you're going through the "Big Dig" in Boston that GPS is NOT going to be able to tell you that you just missed your exit... they do NOT work in tunnels.

    When we're out on one of our boondocking adventures on the sleds (see pic in sig) I have a Garmin 276c mounted on the handlebars... but I wouldn't even THINK of heading out without a USGS topo map of the area & a compass... & I know how to use them.

    I hope no one has got the wrong idea... I know and suggest everyone know how to read and use a map no matter what software/hardware you have or use.

    That said, in today's level of technology there should be an all but superior alternative to the book... all except for an unforeseeable event where you'd use the book as a back up. I think most people here are not looking for something "easier" or "thoughtless" just something better. Considering how much money I thought there would be out there to be made I am surprised to find SO FEW mapping software alternatives and fewer analogs that are rated as highly as Rand's. It's unreasonable for someone new to all this to just assume one company is the end all be all of an entire field like this.

    I am guessing there won't be a "true" electronic atlas until rand makes their own atlas app, tablet/laptop software, and ect.

    As it is, I will use my Atlas when it arrives to make the route, then plug it into PC*Miler and as long as they are the same will then use that software, and when not take other steps.

    You'll have to update "software" a LOT too.

    And in some places, you will get fined for having a laptop open while driving, but not looking at a map.

    $19.95

    Get the BOOK.
    Learn to use it.

    Good point... I forgot about that one.

    I saw where one guy that had a small USB touch-screen mounted as you would a GPS... I would guess for that reason.

    You'd be surprised how many want exactly that... something easy & thoughtless.

    Let's not forget, we live in a time when someone can attain the position of County Supervisor & not know enough geography to realize that Arizona does indeed border Mexico.... even though she allegedly passed geography in high school.
