Suggestions for a relative of mine...

    I have a shirt-tail relative who is currently employed driving a box truck of some kind (haven't seen it) cross country. They recently sent him from the Midwest out to California, where he sat for 4 full days...

    He has his CDL-A, and he's been to a truck driving school, but never been driving a semi, just a box truck. Not a lot of experience.

    His current employer and position isn't really very good and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions as to what kind of other job he could get that would pay better, or, at least be more steady. He needs a routine with specific days off each week. Taking into account his short driving career ( a few months) and only in a box truck, I'd like to offer him some suggestions as to how to move to something that's inherently better.

    Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    If he needs to stay local , poke around the ltl thread. Roll off is good work and alot of guys can use there A to pull a pup roll off. If hes got haz endorsment look at propane del.

    There are plenty of "B" job's that would keep him near home and working mostly monday through friday...with maybe some weekends. Cement, dump, garbage, City and county.... bus.

    Don't flame, they are ligit job's. Depending on the area he is from, Class A belly dump's, rock bucket's and...dang it I drew a blank... <sigh>.

    If he is in the mid-west have him look for the nearest GSF location...to start with he may spend a night away from home , but it will only be for a 10 hr break at a motel , then back to the DC. Hard work , lots of hand's-on labor , but the money is great , benefits too , once he gets a regular bid route he'll be working 3 to 4 days a week...average pay goes from a low of 55k to maybe 60k , many others make 68k to 73k or so , with those that run hard 6 figures isn't out of sight by any means....now by running hard I'm talking about running 5 maybe 6 routes a week depending on available hours. GSF runs the Xata computer/ E-Logs , so they are running legally. I was there for over 30 years...wonderful place , great folks....a career , not just a job. Wish him luck for me...wherever he winds up.

    Hmmm... There's some really good ideas in this thread. I do appreciate them.

    I'm not sure what he really WANTS to do, and I'm not sure that he has to be home every night, or even wants to be. But great suggestions about where to look. I'll pass that on.

    I think he's working for someone out of Missouri right now.

    I have to be honest... I would not give anyone here a recommendation to hire him :( He needs to help himself, and I just wanna help him help himself.

    Food and beverage dist companies may be a viable option, there's the big ones (Coke, Pepsi, GFS, Sysco etc) but there are smaller companies doing the same type of work too. I used to deliver Canadian beer to tons of d/c in the USA that had fleets of their own or contractors coming in an out with straight trucks as well as tractors with shorter trailers on 'em. Quite often I was the only 53' OTR semi-trailer combo in there, but some places had day cabs with loads coming in and out too!

    We currently run lots of highway service for expedited couriers like FedEx and Purolator as well as the national postal company, Canada Post. This is generally scheduled work and while we aren't home daily, we are home weekly on a pretty set schedule. The boss also has a wide range of trucks from bunk trucks, day cabs, straight tucks, cabovers and 5 tonnes because of the variety of customers we deliver to.
